Quality of the basic science classes at Xavier?

    Advertisements

How is the quality of the classes at Xavier? Are they easy to pass and then you get screwed on the Step 1? Or are they following a good curriculum like a US school, at a fast pace with good preparation for Step 1?

There are small, newer carib schools out there that let you pass for 2 years and collect your tuition, and then on Step 1 --> everybody fails. Basically, are the classes legit? And how is the teaching quality of the professors, do they speak English well?

To add to Joker's thought process, can anyone answer as to any objective testing on the basic sciences side, ie-shelf exams?

As per the XUSOM website, there is now going to be NBME examinations for basic sciences! That is incredibly wonderful news! I mean, if you have to take it in order to pass- in that moment it probably isn't wonderful. But the reality is that this is one more advance towards alligning your education towards the same standards as the Step exam! This is excellent news!
Ross did/does this too. And it is definitely one of the assets on how I passed the Step 1 on the first try. Maybe if they did it for clinicals too (like AUC), I would have been more likely to pass Step 2 and nearly be through residency by now.

Long story short- Congratulations Xavier on an excellent direction towards improving the passing rate!

This is good news, to have NBME Shelf exams for basic sciences! Hopefully they will be calculated into your grade for the class. Any word on whether this is being implemented right away? Hope so! B/C I think that is one of the things the NY state board looks at.

Well, can anyone confirm if the Shelf exams have started during the basic sciences?

I have been researching this school very well, and it seems they just let you pass all the classes easily and then you're not prepared for Step 1.

As for the fights. one student had one bad experience and grossly over exaggerates things. bottom line is your not going to like everyone and everyones not going to like you. limit the time you have to spend with people you don't like or get along with if you have to spend any time with them at all. I've been here since PM1 and maybe 10 fights in the 20+ months i've been here. all alcohol related.

as for the bullying from other students. worse i've seen is comments made under their breathes as they walk by or talking trash behind your back. to be honest when your out in the world dealing with patients what they have to say to you and about you will be way worse so better to get a thick skin sooner rather than later.

they started using the NMBE exams this semester (spring 2011) the school helps you prepare as much as they can. they focus on the high yield stuff in class and offer Kaplan in MD5 semester. but it comes down to how much work you put into it that will determine how well you do. with some schools you might have to work a little harder than others.
