    Need help

    Advertisements

    Hey guys,

I don't even know how to start this but here it goes. 4th year AUA student, finished all cores and 15 weeks of electives. Have only 15 weeks of electives left before graduation and got kicked out. I appealed and waited for almost 9 weeks just to hear "appeal denied." I was actually applying for match this year. Last 4 months have been hell. Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. Financial troubles, death in a family etc. I did something stupid (first offense. Never had any problems) and paying for it. So need to transfer to finish last semester. I was trying to post this message as a general message but wasnt able to. So possible suggestions where to transfer without repeating too much would be greatly appreciated. I already called Hope (repeat last 2 years), called SMU (repeat 2 years - also sent an e-mail to Dr. Doherty), called windsor and MUA but no answer. Happy holidays to me. FML

Blah, your life sounds like it sucks right now, but you are in a way better position than most people...so cheers to that. You have more options than you think, especially if you're willing to go to a low tier school like Windsor. I can only speak from basic sciences, but Windsor is making all transfers "test" into the transfer credits. I may avoid doing all that work when you're 15 weeks away from graduating. Try Atlantic or CMU, they accept any transfers with a pulse (myself included when I was unable to get my transcript from Windsor). They're not the best schools, but they'd probably cover for you if you have an "expelled" on your academic record from AUA. Just something to think about.

Yea, it does suck. Actually, it has been miserable for last 3 months. Every waking moment has been a nightmare. Especially waiting to hear back from school. It's like everytime i checked my email, my pulse was like 150 and took 5 minutes for it to come came down. Imagine this happening 5-8 times a day for 2 months. I actually have few friends at windsor. I mean i was schedule to take my CK 2 months ago but obviously couldnt take it. So as of this very moment, i am schedule to take CK on December 30th but not sure if that's happening because my permit was issued under AUA. I have been studying for it (study for 5 min and other 20 min just all over the place) while waiting for this appeal process to play out. I am just shocked that they didn't care, probably because i paid for my last semester in full in May so they got their money.

I was told by the dean to look into another school on St. Kitts which is owned with Ross family (not ross medical school) but he couldnt remember the name. Do you have an idea? Thank you for your reply.

The school your Dean is referring to is UMHS. He "forgot" the name of UMHS? Good God, your dean sounds like a bigger dolt than you. What could you possibly have done to get kicked out of AUA? It's not important for us to know, but it is important for you to realize the severity, or lack thereof, of what you did to get kicked out with one f*****g semester left.

AUA is no different from Windsor in terms of student population and the types of students here. Your rotation spots are similar to ours, but obviously you have 50 state approval.

I get that you said there was a death in the family and that's something any program director or a dean of a school will accept as a reason to accept you. But if you truly did something stupid, like get kicked out for criminal activity (if a police report was filed, you are boned), forget about UMHS, MUA, Saint James, etc.

Windsor probably would have welcomed you with open arms before, but with their policies tightening up real fast, good luck with that. If Windsor makes you take "transfer exams" to determine what you need to retake, I assume clinicals are no different.

Better beg and offer extra money to AUA to take you back. 50 state approval is not worth passing over, even if CK and graduation are right around the corner.

I am just curious to know what someone can do to get kicked out with a semester left.

I truly understand the consequences and i regret everything about my poor choice. It was stupid and had nothing to do with criminal activity. No police report was filed. Didn't do anything of that sort. In last two months, not a single day has gone by where i have been sane. Every single fiber of me is miserable. I was even suicidal for a while. Spent little bit of time on the internet looking up different suicide notes and what would be the fastest way but it was few weeks ago. I couldn't speak to anyone about it but well, i was ashamed. To get kicked out of medical school with 15 weeks to go is just beyond comprehensible. I couldn't stay at the library because i couldn't study. Couldn't hangout with friends because they are gonna ask so why have you been MIA from last few months. What would i tell them? Its like everything that i have ever worked for down the drain. Did 4 years undergrad, did postbac program and tried US school but no luck. How would i pay student loans from undergrad? With 200K in student debt, i just couldn't think straight. I was beyond miserable. I couldn't sleep and i couldn't stay in bed all day because that would just make me feel even worse. So i truly regret every second since that poor choice. And i did explain all this in my 5 page appeal. Had surgical program director, wrote me a LOR and likes me enough to call on my behalf to different programs if needed, speak to the dean but i was told to appeal to the president of school. So i did but no luck.

I went a saw family medicine physician, rotated with him for family medicine, and he recommended that i should go and see a psychiatrist because i need psych workup and he recommended his friend. I went but he wasn't in his office so i spoke to residents and they said, they are not sure when he'll be back.

I explained financial circumstances and provided evidence, provided evidence of death in the family (attached a copy of e-mail which was sent to someone in AUA clinical department) and this incidence occurred few weeks down the road so i could have not made up dead in my family in advance, wrote a 5 page long appeal and submitted along with evidence. Had no issues at undergrad, grad school or at AUA. This was the very first incidence and i have learned my lesson. I did try to apply for re-admission but was told that its not possible. I assumed that they would make me pay another semesters tuition and i would have been okay with that.

You need to keep trying to get back into AUA. Your reason for getting kicked out serious but at the same time stupid. It was dishonesty which is not a good trait to have as a physician, but whatever. Withdraw from the Match and work on passing your Step 2s. I don't think you can retake them without sponsorship from school so I'm thinking that makes it a vicious cycle. But I would hold out and get a job in the meantime to cover the money issue and try to stick with AUA. It's not good transferring schools, especially not for the last 15 weeks.

If you're suicidal, you need to tell your family first. There are many psychiatrists out there, you don't need to wait for the one specific one recommended to you to return from playing golf in order to be seen and treated.

Yea, i am not taking CK without this mess being sorted out. Even though i have my permit and CK test date, i just can't take it. Yes, its not a good trait but with everything that was going on, it was a extremely poor decision but its not a pattern. Never happened before. I already withdrew from the match because this year was gonna be a waste anyway. I am hoping this thing gets resolves soon so i can finish those 15 weeks and take CK and move on. I am gonna keep trying AUA and windsor. Windsor probably won't reply before monday. Not suicidal anymore, it was just overwhelming at that point with everything just being accumulating in a very short amount of time.

Yeah I'm no doctor but I have read the Behavioral Science section of First Aid a few times, and suicidal tendencies don't just "go away." You get to the root of the thoughts and eliminate it. Your trigger has not been eliminated as yet, so I think you're still on the hook and in danger there.

You need to do every thing you can to get back in to AUA. Wait until this semester ends so you've got almost a year off, and try again. Talk to connects you may have that are part of the board that decides this stuff. Ask for their thought process and reasoning for not allowing you to come back. Yeah, dishonesty, but what does that one instance mean in the grand scheme of things in their eyes.

Honestly, I'm no advisor so I'll stop posting after this, but falling from a 50-state school and into Windsor or even UMHS is a gigantic leap backwards. And I doubt UMHS would take you if they knew it was an ethical reason for your expulsion.

Beg AUA otherwise come on over to Windsor.

Yea, i am begging AUA. I did try UMHS (just read their transfer policies) and it said they don't take students into clinicals. I just think its just not feasible to try to repeat 3rd and 4th year. Obviously, being able to apply to California is huge plus since i am from california but california board is something else. I know many people from SGU and Ross who didn't get into california residencies but then again i don't know their entire story because no one reveals everything about their application.

As far as those tendencies go, i agree that they don't just don't go away but i guess i have gotten used to being miserable since it has been going on for last 2 months. Waiting to hear back from AUA was the hardest part because it was out of my control. I couldnt do anything except just wait which i did. It has been really tough 4 months, i just want it to be over so i can finish those weeks left and re focus on CK then take step 3 and apply next year with everything in hand on time. But thank you for taking the time to post and such. Greatly appreciate it.
