    Windsor 2015

    Advertisements

I'm looking at lower cost schools and Windsor looks credible.

    Questions:

Firstly, will the death of the founder affect the school moving forward? Will the school close suddenly because of transition/estate problems leaving students in the lurch?

Secondly, although Windsor certainly seems credible (students are gaining residency), I'm concerned that Windsor is Indian centric. What are students like?

First off, and I have no intention of being disrespectful, but if you're a very literate, highly educated and functional American student, you should go to an American medical school. If you're unable to get into an American school, a Caribbean school is a Caribbean school is a Caribbean school. In the eyes of a program director it doesn't make a difference unless they've had direct experience with one of the schools. It doesn't matter where you go.

Secondly, I'll never say that Windsor is the best school. Windsor is a bottom tier inexpensive institution that ultimately gives you a medical degree. If you have the ability to go to Ross or St Georges, I recommend going there. If cost is an issue, Windsor will get the job done. The thing Ross has above Windsor is their level of exposure. They're more widely known. Will this increase your chances of getting residency, slightly. But if a program is looking at your scores that are 5 points above those of a Ross student, that makes you more likely to be chosen.

I can't attest to the school and their future now that the owner has passed away. However, I do know that his wife was fairly involved in the school. And the school is incredibly profitable. So I sincerely doubt they'll close their doors.

    1. No.

    2. Indian-centric? If you have an aversion to Indians and Pakistanis, medicine is the last field you should enter, followed by Dunkin Donuts/Subway/Jimmy Johns/7-11 franchising.

It does help if you can afford the better schools because they have better clinical spots and a better chance of residency but they also have a high attrition rate and as far as the cheaper ones go, Windsor is good value. You'll have to put up with bad admin and some other issues but if you're either smart and feel like you can get a high Step 1 score or you just can't afford other schools then go for it (in the case of most Windsor students, it's the latter).

Thanks, I really appreciate your response and experience. I note what you say about clinical opportunities. Windsor certainly seems to be both credible overall and a great value.

Really, two factors with Windsor grab my attention: difficult, inefficient administration as descried by Windsor students on VMD and the website reads poorly and is not up to date, apparently. I'm impressed with UMHS and Ross. CMU seems very new and perhaps will gain some real traction next year. I intend to apply for summer or fall of 2015, somewhere.

SGU school official Tipton on another thread commented, "odds of gaining a residency has many criteria. The medical school you attend outside the US (unless a very well known, highly reputable school) not one of the most significant. 1) How well you perform on USMLE Steps, 2) your clinical experience, 3) how well you can interview, 4) how widely you apply in the matching process and 5)what sort of programs you have applied to - all I think are more important than the international school you have attended."

I have Tipton's words posted at the top of my search list.

Please don't lump Ross with UMHS. They are 2 different separate entities with different track records.
UMHS is on the same field as Windsor when it comes to to your education and clinicals and degree.

The only bonus you get with UMHS is that you pay 3 times more tuition just because people like you are willing to
buy into their hype. Windsor grads will sleep easily at night after graduation.

UMHS grads will have sleepless nights and for the ones that don't match into residency, Sallie Mae will
drain every single penny. Sallie Mae will be a burden even if you do match.

Roughly speaking, you can get by at Windsor with total of $8000/ semester.
You would need close to 190,000 in Sallie Mae loans to get by at UMHS.

"UMHS is on the same field as Windsor."
    +++++++++++++++++++
    Right .

UMHS was founded by the founder of ROSS - 35 years of experience and a 50 million dollar investment in St. Kitts.

Sadly, Windsor's founder recently passed away. THAT makes me nervous. Will Windsor successfully transition.

In looking for the best medical education for me, UMHS is many orders of magnitude a superior school to Windsor.

UMHS has higher standards for admission. It has a better faculty and campus. Its students have a better step pass rate and gain better residencies. In marketing, UMHS materials and website are professional, very polished and up to date and they actually use correct English and grammar as opposed to some frankly basterdized form of ghetto-Indian and English.

Windsor is cheap. Motivated, superior students apparently succeed. Then again its owner died and perhaps family and business associates will tear it apart.
