    Starting in Sept '13, premed

    Advertisements

hello people! i am slated to start premed this upcoming term, and had a few questions! after going through multiple threads and seeing the reviews for windsor are fairly mixed, im realizing that most people are settling on the fact that you gotta do well no matter what school you go to and it ocmes down to your USMLE... fair enough?

1)how is the living situation for Royal St. Kitts? do you recommend it or any others? should i get a place there through the hotel or go through the school? internet speeds sufficient?

2)how are you finding the course material in relation to the exams? feel well prepared?

3)im starting to realize all sorts of unnecessary fees, any others i should know of?

4)where can i get my hands on the "BCS" series of books?

5)what modes/apps are people using to call back to the states?

6)anything else i should know that im not currently asking directly?

    1. good. most live here, or in the surrounding area. it's almost like a dorm for windsor and other med school students so you will be around peers at all times. there are better, but as a new person, you should stay here for a few semesters. the bus comes right in front.

    2. the curriculum is constantly changing. for the better, i guess. many came to this school hearing from people that it was easy to make it through. it was. old exams are rampant and they can/will get you by. you're screwed for the Step, though. now it's better and classes are being taught properly, not to windsor standards. nbmes are given for about 50% of the classes, and that should increase in the coming semesters. look nbme up if you don't know what it is.

    3. if you live at royal and take the bus daily, your total, including school tuition and extra fees will be around $7K per semester. how much you spend on food at home and other stuff, that just adds on. you can live off of $30-40 a week of groceries comfortably and healthily.

    4. BRS, you mean. used on Amazon will suffice

    5. some buy magic jack. that works well. skype works. calling from gmail works.

    6. this isn't an easy way to an MD. doing well at Windsor means nothing in the long run. get ready to live amongst the animals for two years (including premed) and sacrifice a lot of things just for the opportunity to study here. making the most of your time here will require you to sacrifice even more things. sacrificing things doesn't mean you'll still get it in the end, either.

bring a 1 TB portable hard drive. not a desktop hard drive. you will need it.

Thanks! i cant help but notice you wrote "youre screwed for the step" can you elaborate?

i spoke to the people at Royal St Kitts who tell me that rooms will be available for me to choose when i arrive, but while i was on UMHSs forum, it kept saying that rooms at Royal fill up fast so its best to reserve one before hand since theier are "other students" trying to get rooms there as well... can i ask, which are the"better" places you speak of?

if you use old windsor exams to pass windsor exams, you may or may not pass. you may not need to read a single word from a book and just memorize the exam. some have made it through windsor using this method, but fail the step or simply do not take it because they realize they know absolutely nothing from basic science. so study the right way and read the books and lecture slides.

stay at royal or sugar bay for a semester. then move elsewhere if you don't like it. most stay in these two places, as well as angelus. all are on the same road and will be on the tour when you come to the island.

come to the island around the wednesday school starts (monday) and you won't have any issues finding a room.
