    USMLE advice

    Advertisements

Hi I am a current student entering MD3 next semester. I wanted to get some advice on how to prepare for Step 1. I started reading FA from day 1 and I am planning to finish reading all of it at least once by the end of MD4. My biggest dilemma is UWorld. Should I start it right now or wait till MD4/MD5? If someone who has already written the steps can comment on how they built their timeline, what resources they used etc that would be really appreciated!

you have to come up with your own timeline. every one is different. if you force yourself to study as much or as little as someone else, you will be like most windsor students who fail the step multiple times or still haven't taken the exam two years after finishing basic science.

know yourself, know what material you need to learn, and divide it evenly amongst the time you have remaining to take the step.

if you are entering md3, then i recommend using a qbank to review md1 and 2 subjects in your free time while doing md3 and 4. this will keep the firs ttwo semesters fresh as you head into md5 to review 3 and 4. take the Step ASAP after md5 so what you have learned is still fresh. few people i know that have waited beyond six months after md5 to take the step have passed it. the few that have were not spectacular scores, which is what they were hoping for by studying for so long.

Thanks PnS11! Will definitely keep that in mind. On a different note, what's your opinion about Pathoma and Rapid Review for Pathology in MD3 and MD4? Would you prefer one over the other? If so, why?

they are golden, like your bible. keep them with you at all times and read goljan during any free time in between classes you have. BRS path is good too, but not alone. as a supplement, it is great and dumb-down a bit from goljan but fills in the gaps.

pathoma and goljan are good on their own independently, but together you should know path like the back of your hand.
