    USMLE Housing BRS Questions

    Advertisements

    Hi,
Im going to be joining this May semester, and am very excited yet nervous. I want to do really well in class and USMLE and wanted your advice on how to approach doing so. I have all the Kaplan Lecture series books ready as well as the BRS books. If I spend the time studying these books, will I do well in class? Also how useful is the USMLE prep WIN course thats offered? Do you recommend I get a USMLE Qbank such as UWORLD and/or Kaplan Qbank when I start classes in May? With all this studying and doing well in classes, what has been your experience of students who were able to pass Step 1?

If I understand correctly I see on the student handbook, that students have either the option to take Step 1 or like a big comphrensive exam (designed for those students who want to practice international other than US) after the first 2 years made by the faculty at WUSOM to progress to clinicals. When do students decide which exam they are aiming for? Also any advice you may have about housing would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks for your time.

Do you want to practice in the US? Then you take the Step. When you pass that, the school will get your score and you will be allowed to start clinicals either in the States or on the island, it is up to you.

The Kaplan lecture books are probably best brought as PDFs. One, all those books are heavy and unnecessary and will take up space in your luggage, and two, they are not super great to learn from. You can learn a few snippets here and there, and they are definitely helpful, but not to learn from completely.

The WIN course is a load of crap. Don't even remember it after this post, you may not even have to take it.

Look on the forum for a list of books used or houmd's "How to do well in basic science" thread that is stickied at the top of this forum and bring those books with you. It would be best not to get it from the school because you won't be able to write in them. The school will give you the books for free, but you will need to pay the deposit on them first, which is $100 USD each.

How much can you spend on housing per month or semester? Some places can be had for around $300-$400 a month and some others can be as much as $2000.

Thanks for this! so helpful. To prepare for windsor, I am trying to get through all of First Aid with the help of DIT before school starts. Will that help me when I am at Windsor to do well in the classes. Also, I have some questions about how to prepare for Windsor.

I plan to stay in the Royal. I thought thats a hotel, so are 2 single bedsheets, 2 pillows, and 1 blanket needed? i thought the hotel would provide these things.
Are the BRS books enough to do well in the classes, or are the prescribed textbooks a necessity?Such as ganong physiology and snell anatomy? Would BRS Physio and BRS anatomy suffice to do well on the in class exams?
Are a sthetoscope and hammer needed? I thought the first two years are pre-clinical sciences?
Is an anatomy dissecting kit required? From what i have read around, student dont dissect and are just shown prosections from dissections all ready happened by faculty? and the tests are all theoretical and not practical based.
Is a printer, and wireless router needed?
Is there a indian restaurent close to the Royal hotel to eat? I thought there is a meal plan?
Do you need to open up a bank account when on the island? Can an american bank account and an american credit card suffice?

thanks for taking the time to answer these questions
