    Semester 5

    Advertisements

Can recent students share their semester 5 experience at the 3 sites WUSOM offers. Are there any differences associated with these sites? Is the housing that the school sets you up in livable? Any draw backs comparing these locations? What is the daily schedule for Semester 5. Thank you

They are all essentially the same. They are motel rooms which are generally habitable. There is a conference room-like room where you have classes, usually H&P classes. There are quizzes daily that review your basic science classes and they do count for points and accuracy. At the end of the semester you have an H&P exam which you must pass. It consists of multiple choice, fill in the blank, and matching. It helps prepare you for clinicals.

All in all, less than three hours a day are dedicated to the quiz and other schoolwork combined including lectures. The rest of the day is for you to enjoy and should mostly be spent studying.

Carbondale is probably the worst place. Everyone essentially goes there and it is extemely loud at all times, and not all of it is because of students. There is a bar/Mexican restaurant connected to the hotel and there are always fights between locals and other not-so-nice people that really make life tough. Even leaving your car parked on the hotel parking lot is a hazard.

Michigan is completely quiet and great for studying, if you are serious about doing so. If you're Canadian, this is the best and easiest spot to get to. If you are Muslim, you will also love this place because there are a lot of fellow Muslims in the area that will be happy to support you during your times of need. The motel is pretty much the same as Carbondale. No motel has a kitchen, so bring a hot plate. Eating out is easier, but might be a bit pricey, but after doing the math, it may still be cheaper than eating out all the time on the island. So if you could handle the island food prices, you can manage eating out at these locations as well. Dollar menus, and whatnot. If it cuts out time cooking and cleaning, why not?

Ohio is the most recent one. The rooms are definitely nicer but since this spot is reserved for mostly people that had no retakes, it may be hard for some of you. But there's a reason it's so highly sought after, because it is the best of the three. It's not paradise, but it's better. Also, for more serious-minded people, you will be amongst other students that did well in their classes, hence the no retakes, and so you may be more motivated with better company.

All locations have all fast food places.

Curriculum wise, it's changed the last two semesters.
For starters, you write an NBME exam online at the beginning of the semester (this is at your own expense and costs $50). Everyday you will go to the computer labs and write a quiz online at the Study Windsor website, the material you need to study for the quizzes will be given to you on the website. It's usually 3-4 power points, 3-4 cases, and 200 winpearls. (Win pearls are 200 random bullet points of information that you're expected to know already). The quizzes are about 30 minutes long, and the number of questions isn't always the same. There are also h and p classes you have to attend and there's a final exam for it. At the end of the semester you have to write another NBME exam but this time you write it at a pro metric centre in the states. I believe the school covers the cost for these ones and your score will be sent directly to them. You also have mock exams which are basically just longer versions of your quizzes, you take those online as well and they don't really count for much from what I remember.

Some rules they said in the past were that for every quiz failed you would be charged $5 and held back to make up for the quizzes you failed. So far they haven't really implemented that one but things might change in the future, even if there are still a lot of bugs in their system.

You can only miss 5 quizzes. So if you miss more you have to stay back and make those up. Keep in mind that every time you stay back you're forced to pay another month of rent (which is $690 no matter which location you're at).

Honestly, my advice is to really know your stuff for this semester, and to not slack off on the island otherwise you'll be lost during and after md5. Make the most of your time there, try your best not to loaft, and just get to it

Thank God they finally turned 5th semester into something seemingly worthwhile. When I was there mid 2011 it was a complete waste of time. They made us come to the computer room every evening for a ridiculous online lecture (a professor on the island would come online and share a powerpoint with us. The best part is that it wasn't required at every location, just mine. On top of that, there were only a few H&P lectures (our professor left half way through and took another job) so we didn't actually do anything except come in every morning for a quiz, then again for the evening online lecture. So we paid tuition and rent for that. I could have stayed at home and completed it.

swoll, it still isn't that worthwhile. not to purposely conflict with you, but it is still just as you stated. students wake up and go take a quiz and the rest of the day is theirs to screw around. the carbondale motel is a ghost town. you will not see any student outside their rooms, unless they're smoking outside their doors. there were more H&P lectures but still, maybe ten?

perhaps MD5 students that just finished MD5 can confirm that this is still going on for the past four semesters. the only thing that has changed is that the school has tightened the leash a little bit on the daily quizzes because people were not taking them seriously. despite their threats of charging $5 per failed quiz, they haven't implemented it for the past two semesters that they've been saying this. sure, in a semester or two it may become a policy, but right now they're just kitty-footing around making a sound decision.

i, like you, feel the same way. if this was all i was going to pay $7K for, i could have done this at home for free.

md5 needs to become a more legitimate semester. it is not "intensive coaching for the usmle" like the president or dean has projected it as to parents and students.

can you spend MD5 on the island? The reason I am asking that is that I want more than 50% of my education done in St. Kitts (since the degree granting institution (Windsor) is in St. Kitts), and if MD5 is done in the US, it seems like more than 50% of the education will then be done in the US. So is it possible to do MD 5 on St. Kitts?

Personally, I would recommend that you do md5 in st. kitts.

The quizzes were so useless, even with all this new material they had too many low yield questions, they were still super disorganized and all those empty threats of charging us stupid amounts of money for their mistakes just makes you not want to study. It was so confusing for us because nobody knew if they were seriously going to charge us for failing, so we initially tried studying their material and we still kept on failing the quizzes. Halfway through we find out that it was their answer key that was messed up, and that they aren't counting them in the end. So we had no idea whether we should stop studying those winpearls and cases, finally pick up our kaplan books and just go with it, or if we should still try and pass these things because we don't want to get held back and pay the school. Biggest waste of life. By the end of it, nobody cared if they passed or failed because we just got to a point where we needed to study our own stuff.

Its a new system they're trying to test out, and I personally do not like the idea of them gambling our future with an experiment. If you're going to pay 5 grand for tuition, and 690/month for rent, at least get your moneys worth. I would have much rather stayed on the island if I had known they were gonna pull this crap on us.

^^ that appears to be the increasingly common sentiment now. get the hospital exposure on the island and the extra H&P and ICM exposure an learn more than you would at the USMLE 'centers" in the States.
