    question about books

    hey guys,
i just have a questions about the books situation..i know you could either buy ur books from amazon or whatever or you could give the school a deposit and then borrow the books from the school. now, if i that do, will i be able to take the books let's say on housing and return it by the end of the term or i just have to use them in the library? i need some clarification..

also, books are expensive..should i buy them? if yes..how?

    thnx in advance !

I want to make sure i got all the good books..

U r looking for LAngman EMbryology.... dont buy any review books now. Try to learn as much as you can here. And then later you can review things when ur studying for USMLE.

Oh i thought you were just talking about Embryo. I meant study from Langmans EMbryology for Embryology.
And by learning here I assumed u go to Windsor. So when you are on the island read langman and the schools recomended book. BRS is board REVIEW series. HOw can you review sth that you dont know. So, I intended to say it is good idea to use BRS series later on. And just go with the schools recommended books.

That being said, I, do contradict myself here, and recommend BRS physiology along with Constanzo for Physiology. The combination of two is the BEST for physio. SO dont just depend on BRS supplement it with the actual detailed text for any particular course.

    alright, thnx for the clarification.
i already bought the 6 BRS books, so do u think i should buy other books or should i just borrow the books from windsor? i start md1 in may.
i was thinking i could buy the books instead of buying them, so i can underline and stuff.

this is the worst advice. buy brs now. use brs to supplement what u learn in class and it does a good job highliting main pts. u wont have time to read all the brs's later.

In your 1st sem you have, Anat I, Phsy I and Embryo. For anat the school's recommended book "Clinical Anatomy" by Snells is really good. I already told you about embryo and Physio.

In ur 2nd sem you will have, Anat II PhysII HIsto and Biochem. For the earlier two courses books dont change. For Biochem, dont even bother with the BRS LIPPINCOTTS all the way, even when ur studying for USMLE. For Histo, I dont really like the schools book. BRS doesnt do justice to histo frankly speaking. What I love and currently use is CONCISE HITSOLOGY. Its concise and to the point and goes in detail wherever required.

Now as you said that you already have BRS series, I would say keep them. Take notes in them. And YES, dont buy the books rent em from school. And take notes as to whatever wud be missing in BRS. And you will find that certain things would be missing in BRS, as its a review. So you can add them. So that comes time for FINALS when you want to review entire anatomy. You have all you want in 1 book.

I have done pretty good in all my courses with this method. I got straight As in MD 1 and Md 2 courses. I currently tutor weak students like you through AMSA who fail their courses just going over BRS.

I got this advise from a seniors student at Windsor and I followed it. It really helped me. I was not the smartest student in undergrad but I applied this method and I did exceptionally well in my courses here. Trust me danidanilian, when u come here you will find professors giving the same advise of not using BRS right away.

The stupid batman however does make a point here about how you might run short of time to study of all brs later. But trust me you will for sure use BRS physiology, BRS anatomy, BRS pathology.
ANd when during the final exam time guys like batman are clueless with the overwhelming amount of material. You have everything in 1 book. And u can juss study of that.

Again dont get me wrong I m not heaviely relying on BRS. Cos for each course you have their own respective good books. So you gotta make a combination of those and study. Also I forgot to mention for anatomy for SURE for SURE buy NETTERS ATLAS. That will give you a good idea to picture things. Makes the learning process easier.

PS My frd batman here think he/she can get out of med school juss by going over some highlighted main paints. And batman, whatever I said is my opinion about things, arrite. Different things work differently for different people. So respectfully disagree next time. dont be a

Bottom line here danidanilian, is that any BRS is a review book. Definitely not a text to learn material from. If you're studying for a test and have read the textbook, gone through lecture slides and your class notes, then as a last kind of review you can go through the BRS. They're good to have.
