    HCP program

there seems to be alot of people with questions concerning the Mentors in Medicine program offered at Windsor University School of Medicine.
The web site for this program does not explain all entailed as well as it could and Dr. Halpin, although i believe a nice guy, doesn't give the information detailed enough to alleviate the concerns that most of us have when we are trying to decide on the best course for our careers.
i will try to expand upon this subject; first the school is a vehicle to get you where you want to take your career. there is no real library or student union. low frills for you there.
second at the beginning of each semester, for new students, it seems to be a cluster, please refer to the other forums on new students for guidance there. my own experience is that no one knew about me, lack of communication between Dr. Halpin and the University staff, but i was taken care of promptly and am happy with my housing.
next you can either do your six weeks didactic or 12 weeks so flexibility is offered and the administrative staff is very supportive.
finally, the teaching staff is excellent and want the students to do well and personally i cannot think of a higher recommendation or reflection on a school than the staff that teaches there.
i know that I have probably failed to answer all of the questions people have regarding this program, if there are other concerns, please feel free to contact me.
there are also other threads within this forum that are both enlightening and informative so one should visit those.
Oh yeah and if anyone knows how i can put a picture next to my name let me know...can't seem to get it, thank god you don't have to be a IT guy for medicine or I'd be pounding nails.

Being a RN you would be a health care professional. The only difference between you and a regular student is your semesters are more condensed. And you have to take and pass the same classes as the regular students.

Does that mean that HCP students finish their classes and write their exams before regular MD students?

    HCP program

Hi. I'm also an RN and I got accepted to the regular program beginning in May,2010. Well, I didn't know much about the HCP program and that's why I applied for the regular program. I called the school after learning about the HCP program and they told me I can still switch to HCP program if I want. The school also told me that the only difference between HCP program and regular program is that for HCP program, you can take semester off to work. The other difference is that HCP program is more expensive than the regular program. So I haven't switched to the HCP program yet because I really want to know more facts about the program. plus why pay more for the HCP program if the length of graduating fron either program is the same? I'm still in a dilemma on whether to switch or not. Please if you have any advice or important information that can help me make the right decision I would really appreciate. Thanks in advance!!

    Hcp

Can any HCP's let me know about the clinical part of training. Would we have to arrange our own clinical or are they arranged by Windsor??

HCP program is only $1,000 extra...from what I have been hearing, many RNs make 5 times that amount when they go back for approximately 6 - 7 weeks. This semester, final exams for all (MD1 - MD4) end by August 24th but HCPs leave the island on July 31st since they (MD1s) take their exams on 26, 28, and 30th of July. They usually return back the weekend before MD 2 starts - which is on September 13th.

Another benefit of the HCP program is that you don't have to go to Carbondale or Michigan for MD5 semester....you can just take those classes online AND work at the same time.

Couple drawbacks (not necessarily): You have to stay on top of things taught in class plus some more to cover whatever you will be missing - sometimes (may be most times), this will be kind of hard to do. If you are one of those students who are not focused and will not study on a day-to-day basis, this program is definetly not for you. On a positive note, many RNs are successfully doing this...the Cardiovascular, Respiratory, and GIT stuff's a breeze so they are pretty set for the physio class (MD1s). <~ you might also want to get started on anatomy - memorize the heck out of Upper Limb, Thorax, and if you still have time, the Lower Limbs. Do all the muscles, bones, nerves, blood supply, and lymph of each region.

You also might have to let your teachers know (and remind them again...and again ) that you are leaving early; therefore, they should let you know ahead of time the date and time of the final exam. You also need to get all ppt slides from senior students and sit down with the professor to go over it to make sure if that is enough or are they adding (or subtracting) anything from it.

All my professors are pretty cool about sitting down and spending extra time when you need it...plus, the AMSA group students are always having TA sessions before or after school if you need extra help. Most of the sessions have been successful thus far.

Hope this helps....If you need any additional help, PM me.

You can use DimDim or Skype to hold online study groups and go through USMLE questions in your spare time... That is what a lot of students here do...
