clerkship grades/honors grades of any benefit for caribbean students?

    Advertisements

I have come across this type of info regarding factors involved in Residency selections(outside of USMLE scores).

    • Grades in required clerkships are the most important academic criteria used to select residents.
    • “Number of honors clerkship grades” was the second most important academic criteria used to select residents in the most competitive specialties.
    • Clerkship grades are the major determinant of class rank. The most competitive specialties rate class rank among the three most important selection criteria.
    • Clerkship grades are a major factor used by schools in electing students to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (AOA). Election to AOA is highly valued by many competitive specialties. In some programs, and in some specialties such as dermatology, membership in AOA is used as a screening tool to determine which applicants are even considered for interviews

    My questions are,

    1) are clerkship grades valued even when you are a caribbean/foreign medical student? Or does this apply to only medical students of US schools?

    2) Do we also have an honor clerkship grade system?

    3) Does Windsor/caribbean schools have Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, or any other group we can be a part of in order in order to become more competitive for residency selection?

i just wanted to know what I can do during clinicals(outside of USMLE scores) to help my chances of getting residency. Appreciate it guys

    1. Grades matter somewhat, but Step scores matter more. Step scores are the one absolute deciding factor. If you have poor step scores, you're really going to need some good extracurriculars and apply for a common residency (FM, Peds, psych), don't apply only to ER or surgery because you're going to be disappointed. Clerkship grades are (from what I've been told) really only looked at as a pass/fail if you're an international grad.

    2. No we don't have any sort of honors system.

    3. To be AOA, you have to either be a US student/graduate or obtain a residency with an active AOA chapter. Being an international/foreign student, you cannot become a member. And even then, you have to be nominated for membership.

You need to become a well rounded applicant. Learn Spanish, look into an online masters program in business/accounting (I had multiple program directors ask me about this and were glad to see it), perform some research, etc. You essentially want to have something on your application that stands out to a program. Remember, they see thousands of applications each interview season, you need to make them give yours a second look.

Best of luck to you. There are a few veterans that peruse the site every so often answering questions when we can. Fire away.
