    Mandatory Clinicals??

    Advertisements

I wanted to start a post on the new rule by Dr. G concerning mandatory electives.

    E-mail from Dr. G

As per the new guidelines effective from July 1st 2012, the educational committee based on the recommendations of accreditation boards and residency program requirements study in USA and Canada it is mandatory to complete the following rotations in order to graduate and complete MD program

Community Medicine Experience : 4 weeks rotation, Monday and Thursday - for 4 weeks, Tuesday and Wednesday-online didactics, Friday- Writing paper

Preventive Medicine : 4 weeks rotation, Monday and Thursday - for 4 weeks, Tuesday and Wednesday-online didactics, Friday- writing paper

Family Practice Research :4 weeks rotation

    Research ( USA ): 4 weeks rotation

Genetics : 4 weeks rotation: Monday and Thursday - for 2 weeks, Tuesday and Wednesday-online didactics, Friday- Genetics exercises

All the students are required to email me for rotation schedule. Please do not schedule any elective rotations and family practice rotation from July 1st 2012. It will be your responsibility to email me a dean@Windsor.edu. Any elective rotations and family practice rotation done from July 1st 2012 without written approval from my office will not be valid and you would have to repeat the rotations or do extra rotations for any taking written approval from my office.

What are everyone's thoughts and concerns about this? Electives are supposed to be our chance to explore & experience the field we are interested in. Are core electives the only opportunity to get clinical experience and LOR's?

I think I am as much confused about this as everyone else. Any thoughts and inputs you may have please feel free to discuss. When applying for residency, LOR's matter just as much if not more than your Step 1 score. As Windsor students, we are already at a disadvantage with the limited number and quality of rotations we can do. For some of us setting up electives on our own is the only way to get good clinical experience. If there is anything we can do to turn this thing around and make the admin realize that this move will in fact hurt us and not help us.

My question is: How does one do a "Community Medicine Experience" elective? That's not even a field in medicine! I think its all **.

Oh how I wish it was ** but my source was actually the school, apparently they will be sending off the rest of the emails today and tomorrow.

Call the school (island or the US) they will tell you its real.

Hmm, I have not received any emails about this nor have I heard of any recommendations to be put in place by any accreditation committees. All I can say is that this is upsetting if it's true

I got approval for my rotation not from the dean because I have never ever received an email from the dean. Where are these rotations supposed to be done?. In any location?

I am as confused about this as any you are. This is definitely upsetting, since I have found out about this I have been so stressed. I have not received the email either but my clinical coordinator did. Quite a few people I know have already received this email. I am almost at the end of my core rotations, so I wouldn't be finding out what this is all about for a couple months. If any of you know anything about how this is going to work, please share. Not sure if there is any way to overturn/petition this.

Does it affect us if we've already booked electives or only if you haven't scheduled any?
