    Some Clinical Rotation Questions/Discussion

    Advertisements

I'm currently booked for Fam Med on march 5th with Medical Health Centers in Chicago. It runs until April 13th and I was hoping on booking another 6 week rotation after that, but even though I called like 2-3 weeks ago, the earliest rotation available after was April 27th (Peds at St. Bethany if I recall and I don't believe that's greenbook). After that there was Peds at May 30th and all other rotations were booked for a while (OBGY for 8 months, etc.). I mean I know spots are competitive but that was just kind of ridiculous, having to wait so long in between clinicals, especially if you want greenbook. It was then that I heard about AMG and decided to check out Atlanta.

AJ seems like a very upfront and cool type of person. Even though you still won't be able to get a lot of inpatient, I don't think that's something us Carib (esp WUSM) students can really be too picky about. Also he said that you can get Greenbook in Atlanta without much of a time gap. Is there a chance anyone rotating with AJ can confirm this? Also, compared to MHC, the only problem with AMG is that you have to pay $100 more per week; which seems acceptable if rotations are really as annoying to book in IL as it seems to me.

Overall I just want to ask if other people have just as much trouble getting Greenbook rotations in IL, or do I just need to book from very far in advance? Also does anyone know what other sites/coordinators charge extra surcharge for their rotations and how much if so? The last thing is that I remember reading before in posts from 2009 in this forum that WUSM had a few core rotations in MI (Detroit/Dearborn); I ended up asking Brittney, but she just told me to ask MHC and they ended up telling me they only had an elective OBGY available in MI. Anyone know anything about this? Did we end up losing those spots or something?

Would appreciate any insight of the above questions, or if some people just want to discuss some points on Clinicals in WUSM, it's fine.

P.S. I know it's not the end of the world to not have Greenbook rotations, but there are states that require them and MI (my state if choice) is one of those. Not to mention considering us Carib students have limited options as it is, it doesn't help to limit them even more.

I spoke with AJ via email and he seemed to be upfront with the pricing and rotations. Here is a link to a thread about rotations. Specifically with AMG

Yeah, I checked out that thread as well and was initially planning on posting in it, but felt like I had quite a few questions not related to AMG as well so I decided to start a new thread here. My main goal is to try and figure out how difficult is it normally to get Greenbook rotations at either Chicago or Atlanta. Also I remember reading at times people mentioning certain rotations to be very tough to get Greenbook, like Psych in Chi; something about people heading out to LA for that. On the other hand, AJ made it seem like getting all Greenbook in Atlanta should not be an issue, but I believe I read somewhere in the forums that some people mentioned some Greenbook are still difficult to get in Atlanta. So that's really what troubling me, I was wondering if I chose to go straight to Atlanta after Fam Med, would I be able to simply settle down in Atlanta and finish all my cores straight, or would I still need to move around?

I know it's just question after question, but I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in this topic and even if people can't answer these questions exactly, a discussion would not be so bad.

Is going with AMG more expensive than going through the school?

    @ cardiomegaly,
Trying to set up core rotations? From what I've looked into that's usually pretty hard to do, but definitely give it a shot. Brittney sent me the following message after I asked her about setting up core rotations myself:

"Yes, you can set up rotations on your own but a contract would have to be established. That is done by you sending me the contact information for the place you are wanting to go and I will contact them and get a contract signed. Once it signed by both parties, you can start there."

Not sure if that helps or if you already knew that, but just thought I'd post it in case anyone else is interested. I'm assuming you need to have some good contacts to be able to set up your own cores anyways? Either way, GL! Just ignore most of what I said if you're just trying to set up electives .

    @ Rosi2
From my knowledge, with WUSM you never directly get rotations through the school, but instead always use a 3rd party to help you get the spots. I'm aware of only 3 Clinical coordinators with our school: MHC, AIFME, AMG. From those, I don't think the standard MHC and AIFME rotations have an extra charge, but some of the rotations may have an extra weekly charge which you have to pay prior to starting your rotation separate to the tuition fee (please correct me if I'm wrong or not entirely right). On another note, AMG requires an additional $100 per week for all the rotations it offers. Unfortunately, I don't really know too much more than that, but I hope it helps.

    Thanks AbdullahM.

So from your posts I guess its 5,000$ tuition plus 125 or more hospital charge by windsor plus 100 dollars extra. So it would be 5000 plus 225/week at minimum. In that case that almost equivalent to the cost of attending Spartan or St. E which offers greenbook rotations.

not gonna lie this thread is quite discouraging to someone preparing for the step, and in opposition to things I have heard from friends ahead of me

I know that AMG charges $100 a week due prior to the start of rotations. $1200 plus the 7390 for the 6th semester equals about $8600 total. That is still not too expensive compared to other schools. Im not discouraged Im encouraged. I will try to set up rotations with some hospitals around me. All they can say is no. If they are too expensive, or if they say no I will move on to AMG. And I will work my but off to achieve my academic goals.
