Requirements to begin Clinicals at Windsor

    Advertisements

    Hello Windsor-ites..
I am thinking of joining WSOM in about 6 mos time...still dealing with information gathering and paperwork..I needed to get certain facts figured out so i know what i am getting into, i hope someone can shed some light here: it would be much appreciated!

What is the mandatory duration of residence in St Kitts. I am a US citizen and would prefer spending the majority of study time in the US.

What are the eligibility requirements before I start clinicals/rotations in the US?
Do I need to pass USMLE step 1 before I can begin clinicals?
If so will there be tutoring available for the same from school sources? Also what do we do in our year in Carbondale? Is it a must to stay in carbondale or can we stay in our home towns?

Can clinical rotation be done in any city or are these places specified by the pre existing arrngements the school has?
Thank you..Please let me know !

All these questions can be found by searching the forum. But I'll answer short - any detailed info can be found using the search.

    1. Shortest time on the island is 16 months (MD1-MD4)
    2. To start clinicals you need to have completed all basic science coursework
    3. The school claims you need to pass, but others have started after failing the Step 1
    4. Tutoring question ??? I have no idea what you are asking
    5. You are in Carbondale or Houghton Lake for one semester unless you are premed - its board review
    6. You have to stay in the roach motels that G-dam owns - they claim exceptions are never made, but there always are - but you still have to pay for the room
    7. Core rotations must be done at Windsor affiliated hospitals, but 4th year can be done anywhere you like provided you do all the legwork

having to pass the step or not, I HIGHLY recommend you pass the step, even if its your second attempt. Once rotations start, you are truly fooling yourself in thinking you will study. There are many things you have to be on top of during each rotation and those all require a good background in Basic Sciences.

I know many just want to find the easy way around the Step, but even right now, I have little time to prep for Step 2 CS and CK which are both coming up quickly because unlike Step 1 prep, I dont have the liberty of devoting entire days to studying.

Thank you, I appreciate you posting the info. I did come across some of the info, but was not sure about the uslme step 1 requirement.
I am (pleasantly)surprised we are allowed to do clincials without clearing step 1, which is a req in US med schools( atleast some of them from what i have heard)...but maybe i am mistaken...
I have written to the school also but not heard back from them as yet...will keep reading the forums meanwhile.

Well I wouldnt actually look at that as a positive. I think it is one of the worst aspects of this school, and the reason why we have troubles with clinicals. You need a passing Step 1 score to show you are ready to start working in a hospital. It will also make the school look bad when the attending asks you how you did and you either didnt take it or failed it. Your goal should be to pass Step 1 and then think about clinicals - dont get complacent and think everything will work out fine if you dont pass - because the reality is, that test is far more important to pass the first time around then to start clinicals immediately.

When G-dam talked to us he refused to tell us where the hospitals were. His justification was that people will be calling the heads of the hospital and harassing them, and we would lose the spots. He also claimed that there are more than enough spots for everyone. I tend to lean on the side of - there are so few hospitals that it is detrimental to name them, and there arent that many spots.

I was talking to Mtawfik about it and he made a good point. He said if other schools found out where we had rotation sites they would out bid us on them since we are for sure getting them cheap.

Just an idea I guess, but an interesting one at that.

there are a few other schools that also push students through without passing Step 1...I am not going to judge their programs as its not my concern, but in terms of keeping those clinical spots secret, I do now see the admins point of view. Clinical rotation spots (good or bad) have been getting harder to find and money does talk. Either the school increases their fees to get better sites, or, we work with the current methods which may not be all that great for some.

Personally, focus on the Step 1 and clear it. If you fail, don't get discouraged. I personally know a few people in American schools that failed Step 1 multiple times and were on the verge of being kicked out but still came through on top at the end...I also know students of larger schools failing CS and CK exams. If yo REALLY want to be a physician, you will succeed regardless of the ** that comes your way.

    Good luck with Step 1
