What is USMLE Step 1?

The United States Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE) Step 1, which is commonly called “the Boards,” is actually standardized test for medical students. The test assesses the ability of a medical student to apply basic science fundamentals to the practice of medicine. The entire USMLE exam entire holds three steps USMLE step 1, USMLE step 2 and USMLE step 3. Students appear USMLE Step 1 following the second year of medical school. The test is administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).

1. USMLE step 1 Format
The USMLE Step 1 is a computer-based test which is taken in a single day over 8 hours of the period. The test is a multiple- choice question series which includes seven sections of 40 questions with a sum total of 280 questions. For each seven section, test takers have 1 hour of time and 45 mins break timing is allotted for each examinee. There is also an optional tutorial time for 15 minutes before the USMLE exam. Candidates can include the time in their USMLE step 1 break time if they don’t take the tutorial.
Only soft earplug is allowed to take for candidates during the exam. Except this, nothing else such as bags, electronics, phones, and even jackets are allowed.

USMLE Step 1 cost is $610 as of 2018.

3. USMLE Step 1 Passing Score
A score of 194 is required to pass the Step 1 exam in 2018

4. USMLE 2018 Test Syllabus
USMLE 2017 covers the range of subjects including Anatomy, Behavioural Science, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Micro- Biology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology. There are also Interdisciplinary topics which cover genetics, aging, nutrition, immunology, molecular and cell biology, epidemiology, and medical ethics.

5. USMLE Step 1 Application Procedure
For USMLE Step 1 registration, you need to be a student from a medical school. In the United State or Canada, students must apply the USMLE Step 1 exam with NBME. The students of the medical school outside U.S/Canada can register with the ECFMG.

6. The Time of USMLE Test Result
The scores of USMLE Step 1 is released each Wednesday. The result takes 3/4 weeks to be declared. The candidates receive an email the form the entity you registered with (NBME or ECFMG) at the time of their scores are available. It is recommended to contact the registration office directly if you don’t receive any email directly.
It is good to know that the candidates can retake their exam if any case they don’t get succeeded there. They can retake the exam 6 times, but they can’t retake the exam to raise their score if they are not satisfied with their present scores.
