Our food comprises of various chemical compounds which are termed as NUTRIENTS. These nutrients are essential for our survival. For our understanding these nutrients are termed as fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water.
In other words a nutrient is a chemical that an organism needs to live and grow or a substance used in an organism’s metabolism.
Nutrients are divided into two parts –
Nutrients required in a small quantity are known as micronutrients. Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals.
Nutrients required in the larger quantity are known as macronutrients. These include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and water. All of these nutrients are necessary for life.
What is the importance of nutrients in our diet?
Health and nutrition are critically associated to each other. As to stay fit, one needs to have good nutrition.
Nutrients provide nourishment, needed to survive. They are essential because organism cannot synthesize or produce them in the required quantities. Inadequate intake of nutrients results into nutrient deficiency leading to various illnesses.
Our body is a complex organism carrying out many simple and complex activities daily. Our body is capable of healing itself with the proper nourishment and care. In order to maintain normal functioning of our body we need to understand its nutrient requirement and should fulfill it through a balanced diet.
With the help of balanced diet one can manage many disorders such as Obesity, Diabetes, hypertension and up to certain extent can keep them at bay!
