    Score matter?

    Advertisements

    Hi guys,
I'm a 4th year student starting residency in July. Does anyone know anything about the importance of step 3 scores? Is it a selection criteria for fellowships? I've been so focused on the 6 inches in front of my face for 4 years now, that I have really failed to even look beyond steps 1 and 2 and getting my residency started. Truth be told, I'm really just praying that the earth doesn't fall from under my feet and I do start working this summer. At any rate, this process never seems to end, so I thought it might be best to go in with some type of a plan. I know that I will have to take it during my first year, so... any advice will be put to use sooner than I'd like to think.

    importance of Step 3

I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or really thanking people who sent you private messages. As far as I know you do not have to take Step 3 in the first year. I know plenty of Residents that waited until their 2nd year because of obvious reasons. For one, intern year is hard labor and they really did not have much time to study for an exam of that magnitude. The first year you are busy trying to keep afloat. Besides, when you start Residency on July you should be worrying about your Intrainning Exam that happens on November. Passing the Step 3 will NEVER make up for failing an Intraining Exam or at least scoring with the national average. In addition, your Residency will give you money for educational expenses so you can take benefit of that. No need to take it before Residency. ( if you already got the spot) As far as the scores being important they become relevant when you are applying for fellowship or if you want to transfer to another specialty. Obviously if you are going to do the average 3 year residency then just passing is ok. No one cares in terms of licensure.

I wish you lots of ribbits!

    Why yes, that was sarcasim.

...but thank you. That answers my question. It is used as a selection criteria for fellowships. I appreciate the input.
