When can you start putting MD after your name....

Is it after being ECFMG certified?

    or

    After passing step 3?

I know its a little odd question.....but its motivation also.

depends on what you want to do with it.

once you have your diploma, you're an M.D. but don't open up a consulation clinic anywhere, because whatever state you are in does not allow you to put that behind your name and use it for the purposes of practicing medicine.

if you want to put that behind your name when you sign your name after purchasing something on your VISA card, that's just great.

basically, be careful with using that title (M.D.) when you are not practicing yet.

    MD after name

Once you pass Step 1, CS and Step 2 and enter residency, we all put MD after our name and referred to as Doctor even though most of us do not have a state license to practice by ourselves. At that time, you have a limited license or a training license. It is up to your residency program on when they want you to pass Step 3 which will can qualify you for a state license. However, even though you have passed Step 3 many states require FMG's to go through a residency program before obtaining a permanent state license. Some states will NEVER license some FMG's because their school is not approved. This does not mean they cannot put MD after their name.

Matter of fact even though you had MD after your name in one state does not mean you can practice in another state... you still have to apply for and get a state license in that state. This goes for USMG's and FMG's too.
