    A 35-year-old woman consults...

    Advertisements

A 35-year-old woman consults an ophthalmologist because of double vision and droopy eyelids. She also has complaints of generalized muscle weakness. IV injection of edrophonium dramatically, but only briefly, reverses her symptoms. This patient's probable disease has a pathophysiologic basis that is closest to that of which of the following conditions?

    A. Bullous pemphigoid
    B. Diabetes mellitus type 1 (some cases)
    C. Idiopathic Addison disease
    D. Insulin resistance
    E. Systemic lupus erythematosus

I'm going with D on this one. Probably more because I don't like the other options. It's a good Q!

I think this question is about more than just "autoimmune" because SLE and DM1 is autoimmune too. I was looking for something that is autoimmune towards other "receptors" like MG. That is why I went with insulin resistance because i seem to remember reading somewhere about there being a autoimmune component...I could be totally wrong...does the SP have an answer to this question??
