which step should you go for

    Advertisements

hi, i am an old graduate and knowledge for both step 1 and 2 is same for me... i don't get much time to study as well, however i was hoping to prepare for step2 1st, as ppl told me that one is easier and score is not that important. however while going through the forums i read some posts where ppl said they got many step1 questions in step 2 exam.. so what do you say which one should be taken first step1 or step 2?
    pls answer

well there's a reason they called step1 one, and step2 two.. it's because most people take them in that order. but nowadays you can take them in whatever order you want. so only because you posted on a step2 forum i'll say take step2 first, if you would have posted this question on the step1 forum i would have said take step1 first. meaning it really doesn't matter do whatever your heart desires. the fact that you said your knowledge of step1 and 2 material is the same to me means that you don't know anything for step1 or step2.

ok this was my basic question.. i don't want to go for something that i desire, just want to know what would be good,i don't want to stuck in middle of step 2 prep thinking i should had taken step1 first.

the fact that you said your knowledge of step1 and 2 material is the same to me means that you don't know anything for step1 or step2

it doesn't mean that i don't know what material is going be tested in each exam.. my point is after a big gap i am starting studying again so its like that i cant rely on recent experiences or memory
i would like someone with a real and solid opinion about this to answer pls who knows much about both the tests
    thanks

i know a lot about both tests, cause i took both tests. traditionally step1 is taken first then step2 is taken second and step3 is taken third, what's so hard to understand? no one is going to tell you to take one over the other. what i meant to say was you'll have to pretty much start from the beginning in your prep for both step1 and 2, in which case it doesn't matter which you take first. the tests have some equalities but also differences. step2 is more clinically oriented and step1 is more basic science oriented, sure they'll have over lap but not too much overlap. just pick one and study for it. you'll have to take both eventually so it doesn't matter what you take first, heck i think you can even take step3 first. The US is great, it's a free country you can do whatever you want.

This is a dilemma that I have thought a lot for one of my relatives. He decided to go with step 1 first. I agree with this plan because it is a logical progression to step 3. Taking step 3 or residency following step 2 is a better preparation than following step 1 because you may forget the important information for step 2. that is just my opinion. My suggestion is to decide on one and go full blast with the one until the finish line. Good luck!
