    An Ethics Question

    Advertisements

Let's say a 3-yo child severely injured his leg and despite treatment the leg started to get infected. You, the doctor, suggest that the leg should be amputated to avoid the possibility of killing the child, but his parents understand the risk but continue to refuse the operation, saying that violates their religious belief. The amputation is not urgent at the moment. Now what should you do? Should you:

    - perform the operation anyway?
    - ask for another surgeon's review and then operate?
    - Seek court order?
    - continue symptomatic care only?
    - something else?

These ethics questions are more difficult than they seem!!
