    Exam preparation - opinion needed

    Advertisements

    Hello everyone,

I am writing now to ask people about their opinion on several things.

I went to a carribean school and I finished basic sciences in the end of august. Right now, I am studying for the exam. I am doing kaplan notes and also kaplan q-bank, and therefore have a few questions.

First of all, how good is q-bank? How well do the questions correlate with the ones on the exam? They do seem pretty doable to me, and when compared with the questions in pre-test books, they are MUCH MUCH easier. Also, what do you guys think of pretest series?

On the q-bank, I am currently answering around 75-80%, and I am halfway done with it. How good is that? What is considered to correlate with the passing score on USMLE?

Lastly, I want to ask about NBME. Right before graduating, I took part 1 and got a shameful 300. I took part 2 about two weeks ago, and managed to get a 420. Significant improvement, but how good is it? It seemed to me that part 2 was significantly easier than part 1, or is it just me?

That would be all for now, thanks for your replies in advance guys! Good luck!

    hi

hey i just read your post and i have to say that you are doing pretty good right now. you average scoring on the qbank seems to be better than most people when they start the qbank...and you are not even half way finished with it. most people see and improvement towards the end of the qbank or the second round of doing questions. your nbme scores seem like you would be get in the 80's .....and they say that nbme is more like the test than the 1 one. do you know how many questions you got right on the nbme? i was just wondering because i am trying to figure out how they grade it. well anyways...just keep studying and let God do the rest. i believe that you will do really good on the test...so dont worry take care

im probably totally wrong about this but u might use this method for scoring. there are 200 questions on nbme and the maximum score is 800, so each question is worth 4 points (800 divided by 200). so if you got, say, 420 on nbme, u got 105 (420 divided by 4) questions right out of 200.

again, i might be totally wrong about this

Well, thanks for the quick reply! The method I used was to read with SCRUTINY the kaplan notes, make my own q-bank (flashcards, which I later typed to make myself find information quickly). Then Kaplan q-bank seems pretty easy and the questions that I get wrong are usually obvious mistakes where I did not read well enough. Very rarely I happen to come across a concept that was not mentioned in the notes.

As for NBME grading - I think they just take the average and assign it to 88 on the USMLE, or 215. I have a suspicion that the curve on NBME is a bit higher then USMLE, since its the more serious students that bother to take NBME. That is just my reasoning.

im not sure at all about how its graded. according to my theory, in order to get 420 you need to get 105 questions right, but that turns out to be 52.5% correct, which seems a little low (i mean u need to get between 55-65% correct to pass the real exam) so i guess you can throw my theory out the window.

135/200=67.5%, which should correlate to a score in some low 80s, but I think it is safe to say that it is in the pass range

Congrats kanson! I really hope you do well. I'm glad to hear that the exam is easy (for you at least!). Couple of questions:

How does the difficulty of Kaplan Q-bank compare with the actual exam?
Did you take NBME, and how did you do there?
What other resources did you use?

    Thanks!
