Help! Im not sure what to do anymore!

    Advertisements

Hey guys! I was scheduled to take the Step1 on June 15th which I have now cancelled. I just took the NBME4 and got a 172. I have read through all of the kaplan books, done all the USMLEWORLD questions and have read through first aid. This is my 3rd time taking the exam, and I feel like I am not improving at all.

It seems like my biochem is still fairly low and same with my Micro/Immuno. Can someone please suggest on what books to go over to improve these. I have read immuno in kaplan and for the life of me I just cant understand/memorize anything.

Lastly on the the NBME one of the categories is General principles of health and disease.....what exactly does that mean? I am low in the category as well.

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks guys!

we are almost on the same shoes. its just that i took the step1 again (2nd time) and am agonizingly waiting for my result to come by...I did fairly okay was familiar with the questions but I caught myself almost guessing the answers on neurology questions since I failed to go back at it for the third time...

I have no good things to share,, but I jst want you to know that there are a lot of people around who are also experiencing the same dilemma as you do...others may be even worse...

So what we can do, is to strive harder, and pray the hardest...Try to enroll to Kaplans course...and try to find a study partner that may try to be at same pace as you are...Now is not the time for us to give up...There are a lot of reasons why these things happen...

Hoping ang praying for your continues perserverance and patience..

I know you have lots of materials to cover for this test, but there are certain techniques that you can use to pass this test successfully. My advices to you are the followings:

1- Avoid to use too many books

2- I advise you to use Board Review Series for the following subjects (Pathology, Physiology, Micro & Immuno, and Behavioral science). BRS are extremely clear, and easy to understand and memorize.

    3. For Neuroscience: Please use Hield Yield Neuroanatomy. I can tell you from my personal experience that this little book is enough to cover Neuroscience.

    4. For Biochemistry, I highly advise you to just study and memorize very well the First AID, draw all the pathways, and know all the enzymes and cofactors used in each step. Do USMLE WORLD in tutor mode.
Also try this great website: www.stepprep.com

    5. To tell you the truth, if you can memorize First AID very well, and Do USMLE World questions in tutor mode as many times, that will help you score well in step I.

Since it is your third attempt, you should make sure you have a good preparation before taking the test. I wish you good luck.

I found Stryer's Biochemistry, Kuby's Immunology, and Mims' Microbiology to be most helpful.

First Aid + Rapid Review Path + Goljan = Pass

Skip all the other nonsense. You're getting bogged down with excessive details and missing the high yield stuff. The high yield stuff will make or break you. Leave the excessive details to the gunners.

There is a flaw in focusing on "high yield." As a physician, you should want to know everything, which is one of the things that distinguishes physicians from other healthcare providers. If you thoroughly understand the concepts and principles of medicine as you should, the USMLE will be a cake walk.
