    Housing (2017)

    Advertisements

I wanted to know if anyone could give tips on housing. I know we're supposed to receive access to a database a couple months before starting but would appreciate it if someone could talk about the different options. (Last info I saw on here concerning housing was in '08)

Message me a list of questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Hi! Sorry it took me so long to answer, I just saw this response. I've always had an apartment to myself, so I'm not that interested in having a housemate so I'm looking for an affordable but still secure and reliable place.

What are the best housing options close to campus? What is the average rent for a 1bedroom/studio? Do most places include utilities? Is The Royal worth it?

    How far are the supermarkets?

What are the schools gym hours?

How reliable is the transportation to and from school? I'm the type of person who likes studying in a library so would the transportation be readily available at random times during the evening or is there a set schedule?

Right now I have the option to take my car with me to St. Kitts, is it worth it or should I just rely on the local transportation?

Thanks again! & sorry it took so long to respond

The best options close to campus are:
    1. Camps
    2. Mattingley heights
    3. Amory Drive

The average cost for one studio i would say is around $800, lower if you live with housemates. Most places include everything except electricity.
Is the royal worth it? I would say that its worth it if you can afford it.

Gym hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm on the weekends and 7:00am -10:00pm during the week.

Bus schedule from campus to houses and viceversa is only at set times. But if you call a cab they can take you anywhere($4-$8 depending on distance)

Supermarkets, they are close to campus. The university also offers transportation to the supermarket once a week. Some also come to campus and sell most of the stuff you would need.

As for bringing a car to the island i would say its better to pay for transportation, more cost effective.

I'm a UMHS grad starting residency. Majority of what the school tells you in recruiting is a lie! I did recruiting for the school and we are essentially paid to lie about how good our school is. We all feel guilty about lying to prospective students, but we need to make money some how. Go to an accredited Caribbean med school like AUA, AUC, Ross, or St. George! The clinical rotations are garbage! Just terrible experiences with 30+ Students so you barely get any patient time. uMHS has terrible reputation amongst residency programs so it's so hard to get a residency, not to mention majority of students don't even pass the board exams because they are poorly prepared! They try to tell you about how they give you Kaplan for step 1, but Kaplan is horrible for studying for step 1, so the transition semester is worthless! They keep saying they will get California in a year, hell they told me that when I first applied...4 years later, NO CALIFORNIA! The Ross family and all the employees are nothing but a bunch of money hungry scam artists! Oh and get used to tuition increases! Tuition was 4 grand less when I started 4 years ago! Go to an accredited Caribbean med school, you've been warned by someone who's been through it!
