    Chances of acceptance for 2016

    Advertisements

    Hey guys,

I'm currently a junior and finishing up my med school requirements this semester. I'm wondering what are my chances but I'm in a bit of a quirky situation (high gpa/low mcat...really low.) My cumulative average is a 3.504, B/P/CH- 3.64. I currently don't have any clinical experience or research but am driven to gain an experience next semester in a unique position. I actually haven't taken my MCAT yet, but am going to take it in January (one of the last ones before they change to the 2015 format). So I've taken a few practice tests already to gauge my progress and haven't really gotten anywhere...I completed all my requisites this year (Spring, summer (2 semesters), and this fall), so i'm pretty new to the material which is why I think I haven't been up to par where I thought i'd be. My 3 practice test grades were 14,14,17. The 17 I got after my midterm this semester so i'm pretty worried. My VR isn't at all where I thought it would be which is really frustrating, partially because I love the passages, but also the ** section I just get destroyed on, PS is my best section. I've done a lot of research this past year at my options and consider myself a realist- by January, I probably won't be scoring a 30. However, I'm not going to give up by any means. I highly considering UMHS because of their continued growth, affordability w/ US loan program, solid output of physicians w/ residency positions, and the high probability of NY- approval. My phobia about applying to this school is that I won't do well enough on the MCAT, by well enough I mean below 20.

My question- to any better informed students out there, accepted, or pending acceptance, what type of stats did you have to get accepted to UMHS?

Don't waste your time applying here and don't accept that you are going to get below a 30 on the MCAT.

If you need more time to study for the MCAT take more time, enroll in a course, hire a tutor... Do whatever you can to get into med schools or DO schools in the States.

This school is not growing and is not on the rise. There is a huge disconnect between students and the administration. There are a couple of terrible profs here that hold people back intentionally and one of them was put on blast this semester. It's corrupt down here. Some of the profs won't tell you what the class averages are and will monkey around with grades so that you don't even know where you stand in their courses. Trust me it's a nightmare and it is not going to be fixed anytime soon from the looks of things.

May be the school was better before when it was starting out and the admin and faculty cared about the students and wanted them to do well, but there is no leadership here. There is no dean of basic sciences on campus, the dean of student affairs who is supposedly the go to person is always off the island or hiding in his office. And the worst part is they screw you out of your money! I'm taking one course this semester and paying 10k for the course which is the same as what someone taking a full course load would pay.

@Apoptosiscd, dang... Thanks for your insight. I appreciate a student's point of view. Yeah I guess we'll see how everything ends up after I take my MCAT in early Jan 2015. My cause for doubt for my MCAT was based on the fact that I did all of my pre-reqs this past year including over summer and I took practice tests throughout the year as I went through the material so it's been gradually been getting higher as I start to review and prepare. Cheers, and thanks again for the insight.

That's only one person's point of view. An effective approach would be to do the leg-work yourself and find out more about the school. Every med school has a nut job who failed and therefore, will claim that it is the school's fault. Seriously? Why would a professor purposely fail students? LOL

So instead of providing your perspective of medical school in the Caribbean, if you even have one/are even a med student, your M.O. is to discredit the opinions of others. You're going far in life!

I respect your opinion. However, I was hoping for some evidence to support your claim that professors are "holding students back." Due to the lack of anything substantive, I merely suggested to the OP that this is one person's opinion and that s/he should dig a little more before making a conclusion.

Calling someone who is in med school a "nut job" when you're not even in med school is not only disrespectful but also ignorant. You're getting a first hand account of what it's like down here. If you don't like what you're hearing then come down here and spend your money, but don't say you weren't forewarned.

"Nut job" and a "med student" are not mutually exclusive.
