UMHS or St. Martinus as a transfer student?

    Advertisements

Hello, I am a transfer student from a US medical school and was recently accepted into UMHS for the 5th clinical semester. I was also accepted to St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM) and they allowed me to transfer directly into 4th year, which was where I stand at my previous school. Can you guys please shed some light on how I should choose between the two schools? Thanks so much!

    UMHS
Pros: better record of matching (list gets longer and longer since 2011, over 60 total have matched), good rotations, better administration and support, better known school?
Cons: need to repeat third year, limited financial aid (max $5,500 school loan per semester at 8%), twice as much debt (about $70K in tuition to complete MD, not including expenses)

    SMUFOM
Pros: can transfer directly into 4th year, institutional loan available to cover full cost of attendance (7.3% int), less debt (about $30K total in tuition)
Cons: only one person who applied but did match this year in a surgery residency in Florida (they posted about 20 or so who matched or is practicing on their website, their office said they are still trying to track down past gradautes from the old administration), history of briefly closing in 2008 due to investment issues (but is now under new leadership, the person who matched this year stayed with the school despite what happened in 2008 so that is why they had so few students apply for the match this year)

I'd go with UMHS. Better school all around. I believe some states require you to graduate where you completed your 3rd and 4th years (IL being one state).

I would call ecfmg and ask about where you could get info about what states require a certain amount of time to be with a school before you grad. I know ecfmg itself does not care when you transfer into another medical school as I called and asked them, however, you might have 1 or 2 states that may want all of your CORES at the school.
Just try to call and get more info.
Other than that, Caribbean is Caribbean when it comes to schools really. Unless SGU. People have heard of them. Ross too.

Thanks so much for your help guys. I really appreciate it!

siheg, can you please let me know how you found out about IL requiring us to do the last two years with the school of graduation? I called the IL medical board and the operator searched through and read me their policies but he couldn't seem to find anything about that regulation.

And frogg, besides Ross or SGU, do you really think it doesn't matter which Caribbean school you came from? I've been speaking to a lot of people (a few state medical boards, deans of schools, ecfmg...) and they all have heard of umhs and not of St. Martinus

I do think that UMHS can give me more options but not having to repeat third year and school loans makes St. Martinus a draw as well... ah it's so hard to decide...

Ah okay. Good luck. I'm not sure how many other states follow this but it could be a few. I'd check out AUA as well.

Stay far far away from St Martinus. Have you read their forums? Please do your research on here and google.

Why not try a different school other than St.Martinus? Just call around and research like mulberry said and find your best deal.
I think UMHS wants to rip you off. That is me personally.

They're just protecting their own *** by making him repeat the cores. It's a much different system coming into the Caribbean, different rules and regulations for matching as you already know. The top few schools would do the same, if they were even willing to accept the transfer. UMHS has a lot more credibility than SMUFOM. We have a bunch of faculty that can write you good letters, too.
