    transfer to umhs or windsor?

    Advertisements

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to the valuemd site, so sorry if i dont post this right!
i have a dilemma: Im applying to UMHS and to Windsor as a transfer student. Both have been receptive to me (I'm in good standing with my school and everything) but that isn't to say im in for sure at either...but UMHS is saying I would have to transfer into their 5th semester and windsor is saying i would be sponsered for the step right away. I have finished the basic sciences and my intro to clinical 5th semester already, so it would be really nice not to have to do that again, and just be sponsered for the step....however I'm torn as to which is a better choice in terms of reputation, clinical experience, and matching at the end. My only qualms about UMHS is how "young" it is.
Could anyone give me their (unbiased) opinion on what I should do? I feel like I would be ready to take the step in 2 months or so, which windsor would allow me to do, and if I went with UMHS i wouldnt really be writing until the fall...and I think prolonging the step for that long would be more detrimental than helpful...
    any help is appreciated!

Why are you looking to transfer at this point in time? If you have finished your basic sciences and 5th semester why don't you just take the step with your current school as the sponsor? Then if you still want to transfer you can go directly into clinicals at either school

My school makes us take the Comp, and I keep missing their cutoff by 1, so they arent sponsering me. i know this means im not perfectly ready for the step 1 yet, but I definitely believe the Comp, or at least the old versions that my school has, isnt a very good indicator of just how ready i am. my uworld stats are ok, and ive done well in my semesters and in 5th. so im tired of waiting around, i would rather be actively working towards something like a clinical semester or the step itself.

NBMEs are better indicators of readiness. Have you done any of those?

I would avoid transferring if at all possible.

no i havent done the nbme's yet, i plan on doing them as soon as all the rest of this is sorted out. I dont love the idea of transfering either, but im not being sponsered by my school, and ive exhausted all options with them. so, since i have to transfer....any thoughts on the umhs vs windsor debate, taking into account the points i made in my first post? thanks!

Doesn't UMHS have a review course as part of their 5th semester. Given your current inability to pass a comp, a review course may be in your best interest regardless of where you go.

Everything I've heard from Windsor is sketchy. Pay to retake exams, students teaching classes etc. etc.

Considering you are having a hard time passing Comp at your school, I hate to sound negative, but if you end up passing the Step, it might be a not-so-stellar score. If that is the case, then if you go to UMHS, not only will it be more expensive, but they will make you do their 5th semester which will take more money out of your pockets, and when you do go into clinicals, you will be stuck in non-Greenbook rotations because that is UMHS's policy. Your non-ACGME rotations will probably be in Chicago.

With those factors being said, why not go to Windsor? At least there, you won't have to do a 5th semester, they have greenbook and non-greenbook rotations, and their rotations are in Chicago as well. All this for half the price of tuition that UMHS charges.

I say transfer to Windsor, keep studying, take some practice NBME exams, and sit for Step. Both schools will have no wait times for non-ACGME rotations, might as well save some money right?

Which ever one you choose, it looks like you have a lot of work to do if you want to do well on the Step exam. At least at UMHS, you would get the Kaplan Review Course which would help you tremendously in your Step prep, which Windsor doesn't have. The fact that Windsor is willing to sponsor you to take the Step exam with all signs pointing that you won't do very well, doesn't make much sense.

Another factor to consider, is financial aid. Windsor's tuition is cheaper than UMHS's, so that should factor in as well.

Its UMHS's policy that everybody has to do non-Greenbook rotations?? Yes, we have two sites -> Chicago and Atlanta that have some Non-Greenbook rotations, but the school doesn't force anybody to take them. We have Greenbook sites in Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, Connecticut, New York, and Puerto Rico, Maryland by my last count. If you have a really low Step score, and want all Greenbook rotations... than there may be a wait, and you'll have to move a bit, but its still an option for you. On the other hand, if you want to stay in ATL or Chicago for example for everything.... which includes some non-greenbook rotations, then that is an option as well.

Ultimately though.... I wish we'd just dump these non-greenbook rotations. Once NY/FL approval is obtained, which will open up a ton more sites... hopefully these non-greenbook sites can become a thing of the past.

Thanks for all the help, guys. Mostly im wondering if i am better off being a umhs grad or a windsor grad. it isnt so much right now that im worried about, but quality of rotations and difficulty in gaining a residency. obviously i know i have to work on getting a great step score regardless, but after that point, would it be better to be attached to umhs or windsor? windsor has a rep for not being a great school, which is what im worried about when it comes to interviews, but umhs is really young and its first class only just graduated. so umhs doesnt have a bad rep, but i dont know if its had time to get any sort of reputation at all, good or bad.
