    Passing grade of 70%

    Advertisements

I was just wondering if the current students at UMHS could help me with something. I read in the information booklet that the passing grade at UMHS is 70%.

Are there more than 2 exams per semester per class? and is the average bell curved?

Do the grades ever get adjusted if the average is too low?

Just some questions that will help me understand how the grading scheme works at UMHS.

    Thanks in advance!

Let me add a bit to gx255's answer. In a class that runs one half semester, like Genetics, there are two exams.
Some courses, like Path I, have three. Most, though, have four....three exams each covering a block of material and a final that is comprehensive and covers the entire semester.

The exams above test material that was presented in lecture. Some courses such as Gross Anatomy and Histology also have lab exams that are practical in nature. These are in addition to written exams.

Professors have the right, within certain perameters, to curve the course grade.

That is a good point, gx255! I didn't think to mention that the shelf exams replace the final exam in some courses. Thanks for bringing that up!

Every so often, the USMLE Step I (the first of three licensing exams) "retires" questions. These questions are no longer used on the licensing exam. Instead, they are used to make up "shelf" exams. Since these questions were once used on the Step I, these shelf exams are very much like the real licensing exam. There are exams for most of the Basic Sciednce disciplines and there is a comprehensive one that covers all of them. Since the shelf exam is developed by someone other than the medical school, it is an extremely good indicator of how well a course is taught. It helps the instructor know where to improve and it guides the course syllabus, to some degree. It also gives the student an idea of how well he knows the subject matter and the areas in which he is week and it gives him a flavor of what taking the licensing exam is really like. It is usually considered a positive attribute if a medical school uses the shelf exams.
