    UMHS and IAU acceptance but..

    Advertisements

    hello all,

i've been accepted to both UMHS and IAU for the may classes.
i know of most of the pros and cons about both schools, but am still in unknown waters about the following and would appreciate it if anyone can help me out with JUST the following; i don't want this to be another blown up argument about who's better than who, lol.

    1) Financial aid? I know UMHS has some MBA program with Davenport and can also do some private loans, or some shift with Citi. Someone at UMHS explained it to me, but it just went all over my head since it was so much info to digest over a phone call.. IAU, i am not aware of any fin. aid program at all...

    2) NY Approval? I'm still waiting on AUA (bc i know they have full NY clearance), but between UMHS and IAU, which has a better reputation of having rotations/residency in NY (if at all)?

Thanks in advance to any feedback

Currently, there is no private loan program through Citi. That's what we had in the past. The school hasn't released any official statement yet in regards to the funding available for the May semester, so you'll just have to stay in touch with them..... The school official has already stated that they will IMMEDIATELY notify everyone once they know what funding options will be in place for the May semester (~ in a couple of weeks)

    2) NY Approval? I'm still waiting on AUA (bc i know they have full NY clearance), but between UMHS and IAU, which has a better reputation of having rotations/residency in NY (if at all)?

In regards to permanent licensure, UMHS students already have full clearance. Currently, we just can't do more than 12 weeks of rotations in NY, or do our residency training there (Therefore IAU won't have any residents there either). Ultimately, the "reputation" part...... is ALL ON YOU. When you apply for residency, the name of your Carib School isn't going to give you the upper hand against another Carib School. Its your grades, board scores, letter of rec's, etc... that will give you a solid or negative "reputation".

Thanks in advance to any feedback

The OP stated that he/she's "waiting" to hear back from AUA (not a student).

    Thanks WSU cougar,
Could you tell me why you made your decision of attending UMHS vs another school like AUA. I ask this because of everything i have read in regards to the amount of time the school has been established and the loan issue, etc... I understand that your response may be partial because you attend the school, however it would be nice to hear what you have to say.
I have completed most of the formalities (visa docs, davenport, etc) to attend UMHS for this May, but am missing the institutional loan of which i am still waiting to hear back about. This is my missing link and the reason I began seeking alternate schools, such as AUA....
Moreover, I find comfort in your quote: "When you apply for residency, the name of your Carib School isn't going to give you the upper hand against another Carib School. Its your grades, board scores, letter of rec's, etc... that will give you a solid or negative "reputation".
Thank you, this helped to dampen my anxiety over making a decision, because i know that wherever i do decide to go, I will do well because i am a dedicated student. I just want to make the most comfortable, fitting decision.

No problem. (And yes, its extremely biased)
I chose UMHS over other schools due to:
    1) Solid Administration, with a proven track record (Founded Ross University)
    2) Great 5th semester program in Maine, with Excellent Faculty and Kaplan Live Lectures for Step 1 Board Prep
    3) Better Clinical program. (All of my rotations were scheduled back-to-back, and the school was very supportive of me scheduling and setting up my own 4th year elective rotations)
I originally applied to transfer into the 3rd-4th semester class (but the faculty weren't in place yet).... and my reasons for wanting to transfer into their Basic Science curriculum, were 1) better loans (we had Citibank back then), 2) WAYYY Better Facilities, 3) Faculty with U.S. Healthcare Experience, 4) Cost of living was a lot cheaper, 5) 5th semester program in states, rather than being on the island.... along with knowing that I wouldn't have to wait for any of my rotations once I passed my boards.

If you keep you eye on the prize and perform well throughout medical school, the rest will take care of its self.

    WSUcougar,
I just wanted to ask you a question that is holding me back from starting UMHS this May. I have spoken with several current students and even one of the professors there and I really think the school will be a good fit for me. However the loan issue is really holding me back. I plan on doing Davenport but know that it wont suffice. That is why I will be relying on the institutional loan every semester. I understand that tuition will increase when in clinicals and hope that the institutional loan will as well. In short, I am worried that there will not be an institutional loan offered every semester and that I would end up starting school there and then suddenly no loan. I would then be stuck.... What do you think?

    Steezy,

I attend IAU right now as a second semester and I'd recommend not coming here, I'm trying to transfer to UMHS for many reasons. The water situation here in St. Lucia sucks because they don't even have a proper water filtering system. Whenever it rains here, the water gets shut off. Also, IAU has not gotten New York approval yet and IMO, I don't think they will. The administrators here are not proactive and not to mention sketchy. There are no good places to hang out here, basically you have to take a one and a half hour trip to the city of Castries to enjoy yourself after exams/weekends. Anyways, there's much to complain to about but not enough time. I'm a pretty easy going person but this place just has tested all my limits. Hope you figure it out and good luck with your decision.
