When to enroll Jan, May or Sept?

    Advertisements

    Hi everyone,

This question is directed towards students who are currently enrolled at UMHS. I am a prospective student and am wondering what is the best time to enroll (Jan, May or Sept. )? My goal would be to complete the program in the least amount of time possible so does it make a difference when you enroll? I read in this forum that clinicals dont start until June/Aug, so if i enrolled in Jan, for example, then i would not be finished the portland 5th semester until December of following year which would mean i would miss the start of clinicals. So if some current students could answer these for me that would be great:

    1) Can you start clinicals in January or are they only available in June/August?

    2) What time of year can you write Step 1? If my 5th semster in Portland is Sept - Dec, can i write step 1 while i am doing this semester or do i have to wait until i finish the semester and if so how long do i have to wait to write step 1?

    3) What time of the year do typical residency programs start?

Thanks in advance for your help..

"My goal would be to complete the program in the least amount of time possible so does it make a difference when you enroll?"

What ultimately dictates how long it takes you to finish the program will be your own success/failures and comfort levels to progress. Some people fly right through and have no delays (still takes just under 4 years to complete the requirements for the M.D.) while some, even without failing any courses or being held up, take a while to sit and write for their exams, or sit and wait for choice clinical placements.

"I read in this forum that clinicals dont start until June/Aug"

This sounds bogus to me. In my class, people were started in clinicals as soon as possible after they finished with Step I. Most of the rotations that the school has arranged have multiple starting dates for student cohorts throughout the year, and if you are willing to go to whatever is available, you can usually start a week or two after your Step 1 scores are in.

"What time of year can you write Step 1? If my 5th semster in Portland is Sept - Dec, can i write step 1 while i am doing this semester or do i have to wait until i finish the semester and if so how long do i have to wait to write step 1?"

The Step 1 is administered by a huge nation-wide testing center - dates are literally all year long. However, the school does require you to prove your readiness for the Step 1 to try and prevent students who are unprepared sitting for the exam - and you will not be able to take the exam until you pass this test, which is at the end of the 5th semester in Maine. Therefore, the soonest you can usually sit for Step 1 is probably 2 weeks after the last date of your 5th semester (there is processing time with the ECFMG for the permit needed to book a test date).

"What time of the year do typical residency programs start? "

almost all residency programs, at least those matched through the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) main match will start on July 1st. Many have a short (around 1 week) orientation program, so keep the last weeks of June free.
