Should i transfer into the clinical program at umhs ?

    Advertisements

Hey guys, i'm thinking about transferring into the UMHS clinical sciences program. I am unhappy about the clinical sites offered by my current school and they have yet to acquire new ones. Is it worth transferring to this school? Are their sites worth the paperwork it takes to transfer to another school? Can you guys give me any info on the current state of UMHS regarding clinicals? Any information is welcome. Thanks.

if you transfer after you take (and pass) step 1, they will make you go to maine for the ICM and the Kaplan Step 1 course.. even tho you took step 1, its just another way for them to extract 10,000 from you.

as for rotation sites, they can start you in chicago or atlanta and have you do cores back to back, but they will not all be greenbook rotations (this has been discussed, do a search). if you want greenbook, you will have to move around and probably wait for sites to open up.

Actually a slight correction to the transfer aspect. If you pass step1, u will have to do med 5 in maine, but only for ICM, not for Kaplan as per last time I knew, b/c I was in same position as to when to transfer. When I spoke with Admin at that point, I was told i would be exempted from doing Kaplan step1 course and not have to pay for that portion, so I if i recall correctly its about 1 and 1/2 month worth time u have to spend in Maine prior to starting ur rotations if have passed step1 and then transfer.
Now as far as rotations are concerned. Yes you do have to move around if you want all greenbook, as I did the same thing to ensure all my rotations where greenbook. It's also important to ensure that you do your own research to ensure the site is greenbook and not umbrella. As far as requesting all greenbook from admin. I know some ppl have had problems while others have not...Honestly I have had a great experience dealing with clinical admin and them catering to what I would prefer. If you are respectful to them, understanding and willing to work with them, you generally will get what you requested.

Imed, where did you transfer from? I was recently given admission into both UMHS and AUA for 5th semester and debating which route to take. Any input/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

if anyone has taken step 1 already (and passed) and are thinking of transferring into UMHS for 5th semester in maine, my biggest suggestion would be to sign up for Step 2 CS immediately after the ICM portion in maine. the ICM portion of our 5th semester was very beneficial for CS. knowing what i know now, i probably would have signed up for CS right afterwards and taken it and gotten it out of the way. our ICM was good practice and structured for it as such. i was too busy studying for step 1 that i wasn't really thinking about Step 2 CS (and rightfully so). but if i was a transfer student who already had taken and passed step 1, the time right after ICM would have been the perfect time to take CS and get it over with.
