    Anywhere but UNIBE!

    Advertisements

Donít go to Unibe!!! Iím a current medical student doing my 3rd year now. Let me start by telling you that this university is by far the worst institution for medical students. It doesnít prepare the U.S. students for the U.S.M.L.E. at all. They offer the Kaplan course for only 4 months ďif you choose itĒ but thatís an additional $5,000(oh, thatís only for 4 months). The passing rate for the USMLE is so bad in this school that the US has placed this school on probation. The US has given this school a few years to improve their passing rate and if not corrected they will remove all future Stafford loans. The teachers are mediocre at best. These professors are not U.S. board certified and donít care to be and the few board certified professor that are here (2 of them), are here by luck not because the school is paying them to be here. The university pays them minimum wage and many donít care to even show up for class. This year (2010) for the ENGISH section the school put a block on us so we couldnít register to any hospitals and gave priority to the Dominican students. They had the first choice to the best hospitals and the university would not correct that decision. We were given the worst hospital with no air conditioning and no modern technology. All we have is a stethoscope and blood pressure cuffs. Thatís ok if you want to be a nurse. We are paying 5 times more than the Dominican students and treated like crap. If you are planning to apply to this university DONíT do it. Try to get better grades and apply at a different university. By the way if you donít believe me ask any US student going to UNIBE. They will tell you the same thing that I am telling you now. I wish I had known this 3 years ago, I wonít have come to this over priced piece of crap. I wonít even recommend this school to my worst enemy. You have been warned.

UNIBE has never been the best option for US students. The school has a poor pass rate and it has always been the same way. My guess is the school will lose its student loans in the near future. They just have no way of improving those USMLE stats. The only reason students go there is because of the loans and not the education. But that's coming to an end and UNIBE knows it. This is why you are being treated like crap.

    Cry baby :'(

You shouldn't whine so much. Who cares about the pass rates? Who cares about Kaplan? Doesn't everybody already have the videos and books anyway?? I have Pass program, Doctors in Training, Kaplan, Golgan, plus my First Aid. Are you the only student in school without the resources? So now you want the university to take the exam and pass it for you as well??

I don't sympathize so much for your section. I AGREE 100% that you guys were treated unfairly and that you should have had an equal opportunity to register at the same hospitals as the Dominicans especially when you pay 3 times more!! But let's face it..your section is full of cowards. You guys settled for the scraps instead of not registering at all and uniting as a group to go talk to the front office. I'm sure they would have reset the system, but you were all too afraid to get anything done. Now you're on Value MD complaining.

By the way, you shouldn't talk so much trash about your own school. Haven't you learned at least that? What's that say about you doctor???

I dont think UNIBE or many other non US schools really care or are in the business of specifically preparing students to pass a non dominican exam. Perhaps they should be as it seems the stafford loans are now tied to usmle pass rates and unibe has an english language program that arguably is there to get non dominican tuition (money).

Actually, there have been US medical schools that had dismall board pass rates, so much so, they had to institute special tutoring/classes to raise their scores. If memory serves me right one was Kansas or Indiana. Their board notes were highly sought after by US and IMG's alike.

Paying 3-5 times the tuition should get you decent clinical facilities, unless they institute a system based on GPA = best clinical facility.

I used to be impressed with US trained and or BC teachers at an offshore school. Not anymore, since I have worked with and taught IMG's to help pass CS exam. There are excellent doctors that never stepped foot in the US/Canada, or any G7 nation.

Part of the dilemma in he DR is the lack of (at times) logic and reasoning that we know from developed nations and even some developing ones.

Unless there is a dominican on board that is in a position to make clear well thought out decisions based on strategy and logic, yes, the school may very well lose the foreign tuition/students.

It wouldn't take too much for them to incorporate a usmle prep from day 1 and include it as part of the already lucrative tuition. This would attract students and also boost pass rates, save the loans and the program.

Doesn't the American surgeon UNIBE liaison act as an advocate for you guys????

They already have. The tuition for any new student is $7500 a semester, but they will be taking a totally new schedule with USMLE prep included with the tuition. All students must have their step 1 completed before advancing to year 3 or pre-internado as they call it here.

The crybaby who started this thread is giving the wrong type of advice. Truth is nobody really knows what the pass rates are right now anyway. Please give me the source for all the garbage coming out of your mouth. Besides it's not a revelation that until now the school never prepared you for the board. Why whine and complain now? If you did any research on the school before, you would have known exactly what to expect. I came on these boards and came to the DR personally before I started. Everyone said the same thing; work hard and prepare yourself. There's plenty of time to do it. If you haven't been able to is because you have not wanted to. No excuses. Try to spend less time at the resorts.

In '07 when I started, I was paying $4000. I am now paying $5500. For all new students coming in tuition is $7500.

Guess folks shouldn't be complaining, huh?

Theres no use in complaining, in this school your section has to be united and have courage to stand up in moments when your not treated fairly.

I've had my share of moments, yes UNIBE is trying if thats what you want to call it, they are implementing a new pensum which even though my section are the guinea pigs, i believe is a good pensum, now the whole delivery i don't know how it will work work. Things look good on paper, but who knows, we shall see.

They just opened up the new 10th floor School of Medicine, which has WORKING A/C and very nice and comfortable classrooms, FINALLY A PLUS!!!

I think some of the new rules are good, they will help keep students focused and will add some needed pressure which hopefully will push students forward.

I know nothing of the pass rates, but i feel that all the new changes will definitely raise those statistics.

I'm not defending the school, I have already had my mishaps this semester, but i do see a sneaky twinkle in UNIBE's eye, maybe a better future? hey it's good to hope, 4 more years of this baby .

The grass isn't greener on the other side

Many students think that our school is the only one that has problems; its not like that at all. Believe me, I've been around UASD, UCE , Unphu etc...not because I've attended those schools but because I have friends there (I'm not gonna go into details because of respect to those schools). Its much worse, trust me. Even when doing rounds in the hospital, the students that are better prepared seem always to be Unibe and Intec (At least that was my experience in the hospital, of course there are always exceptions). Moreover, I've done a semester abroad (USA). Before the rotation,I was worried, I thought that the US medical students were gonna crush me and make me look bad. It wasnt the case, we were at the same level of knowledge and they were even complaining (to me )that the teaching at their medical school was bad, which left me in complete shock. YES!!! A US MEDICAL SCHOOL IM NOT TALKING ABOUT A CARIBBEAN SCHOOL WHICH DO THERE ROTATIONS IN THE US. They asked me if I had done procedures, well I told them that Ive taken out blood (femoral, arterial u name it ive done it), suturing, spinal tap, bone marrow aspirate, ekgs, etc... They were like wow, we've just took out some blood from a doll that the school has acouple of times that all. After they spoke to me they felt ripped off by their medical school...hehehee. AND YES AGAIN IT WAS A US MEDICAL SCHOOL
All in all there are problems everywhere, and I believe Unibe gives u the tools to become a good doctor, u just need to study , study and study harder.
