    Unibe vs. Uce help!!!!!

    Advertisements

Hi I am considering which school is best for me and have some questions for those of you who may be able to answer. Answer one, two, a couple or any that you can most honestly.

    thanks!!!

would you recommend uce or unibe to a friend who is torn between the two?

do most people that apply get in?

is it hard to get in?

what do you think they look at the most?

what don't you like about uce/unibe?

what do you like about uce/unibe?

is uce or unibe better for an international student who does not speak spanish?

does the faculty know what they are talking about?

    how are the classes?

do you feel like you are being taught well?

how is the transition from a different country to the dominican?

    which school is better overall?

how do you like the apartments next to the campus?

    are they expensive?

    are they clean?

    do you feel safe?

how many apartment buildings are available?

is it close enough to walk to the school?

    is there lots of noise?

do you recommend some apartment complexes over others?

what are the stereotypes for each apartment complex?

Wow, thats alot of questions. Please use the search function and you'll find most of the answers to your questions. I'll do a very perfunctory job, now.

Read and visit, everyone's choice is individual.

do most people that apply get in?
At UCE almost 99.9% of people who apply get in.

is it hard to get in?
    See above.

what do you think they look at the most?
Money order attached to the application.

what don't you like about uce/unibe?
    @UCE too much.

what do you like about uce/unibe?
@UCE, san pedro de macoris has almost nothing to do, so studying shouldn't be a problem.

is uce or unibe better for an international student who does not speak spanish?
Unibe is better, I guess. However, at UCE an international student can definitely get through without speaking spanish.

does the faculty know what they are talking about?
@ UCE, faculty are hit or miss.

    how are the classes?
    relatively small, humid.

do you feel like you are being taught well?

how is the transition from a different country to the dominican?
I've never lived in another 3rd world country, but i'd guess that the transition would be similiar.

    which school is better overall?
This is a very individual question.

how do you like the apartments next to the campus?
which apartments are you talking about?

    are they expensive?
apartments in san pedro range from $100 to $700+

    are they clean?
    If you clean them.

    do you feel safe?
    So far, yes.

how many apartment buildings are available?
    Many.

is it close enough to walk to the school?
    yes.

    is there lots of noise?
    at times.

do you recommend some apartment complexes over others?
    yes.

what are the stereotypes for each apartment complex?
    idk?

love some of the answers above

go down for a visit to the DR and get a feeling for San Pedro
and the Capital. Flights are cheap. Its gonna be your
place to live for 5 years. You need to do this. My opinion. You need
to see hear smell taste and feel the DR. Not from us but from your gut!
Dont listen to us. You say you have never been in the third world.
Well, the culture shock will be mitigated if you go down first to visit.
you can speak to students there. You can see what you are getting into.
You will never get a realistic feel unless you go.

Consider the flight part of the application fee.
if you want to email me GLosack@nyc.rr.com but i graduated UCE in 1980. good luck

    UCE and English speaking students

Hi, I speak very little spanish and wanted to apply to UCE. How hard will it be for me? Do I need to get rossetta stone before I enroll. Also, what is the GPA requirement for the school and do you need MCAT scores?

Where excatly is UCE? If you're talking about the one here in the DR, then good luck. There are 3 schools to consider here 1) PUCMM 2) UNIBE and 3)INTEC

If it's not on that list then tread at your own peril.

Losackmd, your credentials will only get you so much as my envy from me. Flashing however as if they make a difference here is ridicoulus though.
My credentials: CURRENT med student, 2nd generation going to DR for med school, well established family LIVING in DR for past 50 years.
Maybe in the 1970ís when you had no other choice UCE was a valid one. Not anymore.

Losackmdís advice is predicatable ďIf I did it in the 1970ís you can too, now.Ē And ďitís not the school that counts, itís the student and his determination.Ē

Spot-on, these are mostly correct. But guess what, school counts too. Since you have been here some schools have progressed far beyond what you knew. Is the sole reason that you managed to grad from UCE really reason enough to recommend it?

Save yourself the headache. If you are going to a 3rd world country to go to medical school WHY would you ever go to a second rate med school (2nd rate by THIS countries standards.)

While in the end itís the student that counts most, the formation of that student is made in large part by the school. So yes, it does count.

To anyone thinking of coming down here. Come down here first, get a look around. If youíre a dropout or looking to buy your degree, there are schools for that, but avoid those like the plague. Then there are your decent schools that DO TRY but just donít cut the musturad (they are riddeled by government idiots, constant protests, lack of funds, ect. Or they are made for [super] low income students, which is fin, for them).

Then there are your schools where the sons and daughters of the well to do doctors go. My advice, go to those schools.

Dr1. com for more info, you'll find a section on schools here and a forum.

to each and everyone of you again and again!

    quoting this last thread:
"While in the end itís the student that counts most, the formation of that student is made in large part by the school. So yes, it does count. "

you wanna believe this, its on you not me but its so fallacious really, truly from the bottom of my heart it is! I know for a fact it is quite the opposite
in FMed schools which are merely businesses and couldnt care at all what you end up becoming or doing! Common sense 101

with all due respect, but with all the experience and knowledge I have of what you are all going through im sorry to say this
( this might hurt!) you might have to study more in spite of/because of the school you attend, i.e. the school might hinder you from studying what is necessary to get the heck out! Do not depend on the school IMHO!
    at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
get a WHO accredited school and study to pass those important exit exams. Get all those notes you need old questions and ignore the rest
    except the gorgeous Dominican girls.
    that is your task.
go to the school and get the right materials to pass those exams and get the H out.

stay tuned for "Bearly Fit" a childrens book coming out soon about a bear who learns that exercise is important. Photographed and written by yours truly. The Pandemic of Childhood obesity is spreading all over the world.

There is a "business aspect" in every school, there must be, since they need to pay salaries, rent, utilities, hospitals for rotations in some cases, etc etc.

I was at UCE at the same time frame as you, I was one of MANY that chose to leave and study somewhere else. I have already shared in torrid detail why I/we left UCE. Actually for reasons that hindered us from studying or at times even sleeping or showering. Yes, there were options even then, before the internet.

Again, the people that graduated uce merit purple hearts and medals of honor, and likely a high % of them succeeded post uce. A high % of grads from other schools in RD and other countries have also succeeded and continue to succeed.

Given the competitive climate of getting residencies today (more difficult then it was for us) I would think it is important to do clinical rotations at places you wish to do residency at. Work hard and diligently, become friends with the people there; PD, residents, attendings. Leave a good impression and that will help greatly to get accepted at their program.

I have fond memories of La R.D.

PS; for those that may have a tough time living in a 3rd world place, SPDM is not for you. Santo Domingo is much better. Distractions can also motivate better study; eg; I used to know my reward for hard work and diligence would be a weekend pizza or lasagna at Vesuvios on the Malecon, or similar.
