    Re: Nordestana

Nordestana takes some getting used to...but it's doable.

The admissions process was smooth& painless- most of the college personnel are friendly and helpful -professors included. An entrance exam was given (Spanish & Math) - but it was relatively easy.

The school qualifies for federal & private(Sallie Mae) loans.

    So far, so good...

    Views on Nordestana & SFde

Nordestana is a Catholic University -students attending this institution are
expected to be fluent in Spanish, although I've met some foreign students who struggle with the language (myself included).

San Francisco de Macoris is an interesting place. It's a small town, which I'm told is prone to "huelgas"-(I've been warned to stay home during these events), one movie theatre- a few fast food restaurants (BK & PHut)- aLaSirena. Certainly not an entertainment hotspot, but the people are friendly, & thecost-of-living is reasonable (I'm renting a really nice three bed in a residential area for "dimes-on-the-dollar")& it's about an hour from Santiago and two hours from Sto.Dgo.

I've had a few issues with the educational process--teachers haven't showed up for class, classes have been changed or canceled with no warning (had to then track the teacher down and ask for "favors"), but I'm told this happens at most schools here in La Hispanola. I'm learning to take it in stride.

Well, I'm sure that's more info than you asked for, but just wanted to share something on Nordestana since it's sorely underrepresented in this forum.

    ciao.

    ciao.
Seems like a cool place ECMBD2!!
We have a MikiDs only, And a Dominos Pizza, where cheap stakes like order to eat the 2 for 1 on Tuesdays, which lasts me till Wednesday.

About the Spanish part,How much bad Spanish do they tolerate?I have a husband -wife team coming from the US,who are my friends. They are interested, but their Spanish sucks. When I say Sucks, I mean really sucks.Do you think they might get accepted there. They have premed from Hunters College,NYC, with over 3.4 GPA.Some how they did not like SPMD and UCE.

I agree Nordestana and UCE are not represented adequately, think they deserve their own forums.

    Adios

    Spanish Req.

The UCNE website states that all extranjeros must:

"Tener dominio del idioma español en caso de no ser hispano parlante. "

I know several students who can't speak Spanish at all, but they understand it well. I believe your friends won't have a problem at Nordestana if this applies to them...

    Ucne

I am a current student at UCNE, it is true teachers just go to classes 5-7 times per semester--they are known for missing classes, most of the time we have to wait for the teachers at least 1hour after classes start otherwise the teacher marks you absent. You have to know spanish, it is not true that you can get by with only ingles--one friend of mine told me that in one test he wrote "verdad" "falso" in T or F and the teacher marked them wrong because he did not know ingles. If you know no spanish don't come to UCNE, go to UNIBE o UNPHU where they have programs in Ingles.

Posing the question of whether the DR accepts those with "broken spanish" is rather an interesting concept.

Regardless of how it is spoken, there are many wonderful people there....
