    Competitive for Irish Schools ???

    Advertisements

Ok, so I am looking for a little friendly advice here. I have an acceptance for the KBTGSP program at SGU (Caribbean) for January 2011. Problem is that I put through my applications to all schools in Ireland via the Atlantic Bridge Program. I know that you hear back from Irish schools in Jan./Feb. So I am torn about the acceptance; i.e. if I wait to hear from Ireland I will lose out on SGU.
I want to know if I should accept at SGU in January, or wait to hear back from the schools in Ireland? However, based on my stats; is getting into an Irish school a gamble that I might lose?

    Here are my stats:
Undergraduate degree in Classics - 3.1 GPA
Full year of first year physics, chem., bio, physiology - 3.87 GPA
    MCAT - 31Q
    Great letters of reference
EC’s include: traveling around the world and living in third world countries, volunteering in the emergency department and personal patient care, martial arts, holistic health, bla bla bloo bla blee… you get the point.

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Honestly, most people don't hear about Irish schools until March/April, and sometimes even as late as May. I didn't receive my acceptance to UCC until the end of April. Another thing to keep in mind is that Limerick doesn't interview until April.

So your decision mainly rests on a few things you need to ask yourself. Are you willing to go to a Caribbean school and be stuck with a stigma that you are going to carry around for the rest of your career (albeit one that may not be deserved but exists nonetheless), or do you want to gamble and try for an Irish school with a good reputation and high quality education, but possibly not get in? I had a GPA that was slightly lower than yours, but it was from a science background, not an arts/humanities/whatever classification it is, and made it. Research is also key, along with your statement. Another possibility is to see if you can push your start with SGU to September, therefore you'll receive your potential acceptances before starting.

If I were in your shoes I would see if I could defer the admission to SGU long enough to find out. I would think that Ireland would be worth it.

Thanks, I am going to try to work out a deferral. If they won't allow it, then I will probably just get the show on the road and run with SGU. The UK sound great, but I can't potentially pass up my chance at entrance this year; mostly because I don't think I am a shoe in for Ireland.
