Lets get rid of the 45 second rule!

    Advertisements

I have no idea why this rule has survived, but it seems like one that ought to be tossed. The only reason I can think of for the rule is to prevent spamming. However, there are entire forums devoted just to spamming! So if you're going to let people blatantly spam anyway, why bother with the 45 second rule. Usually, the rule just seems to slow things down, even when you're posting helpful replies. Also, you could be reading and posting in two forums at once on ValueMD, in which case the rule is also annoying.

The rule is not in place for the mods, and they mostly just abuse it anyway, so why keep it in place for everyone else? Do the mods really need to have the special privilege to write things like:

    yaaaaawn

    monday

    i hate mondays

    yaaaaaaawn

...in 4 different messages, back to back? Either spamming is allowed, or it isn't. Since it clearly is, then can we please just get rid of the 45 second rule? Honestly, the rule becomes an annoyance, at least for me, far more often when I'm actually writing useful replies than when I'm spamming.

Also, why don't we get rid of the character limit, while we're at it. So often, people just add a bunch of periods to meet the limit anyway. So again, we wind up with a rule that is unnecessary, and frequently gotten around without consequence anyway. Can "yes" or "no" not just be valid answers sometimes? Maybe turn this into a poll?

    Thanks!

Well, either a person should be permanently banned or they shouldn't. A person should receive an infraction right away, or should receive a courtesy PM. Take away those "special privileges" away from us first.

Is it really that big of a deal to wait 45 whole seconds? If you're going to tick off a moderator, it should at least be over something more interesting or important...
If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!

that's exactly why there are threads for normal chatting so it doesn't clog up important info on other important threads.

The main reason for the 45 second rule is to prevent spam....but not in the sense that you're using it (i.e. posting relative nonsense in the IYPC thread), but for real spam (i.e. spam bots posting multiple advertising messages in a short period of time). Can it be a bit annoying for regular users? Yes. Is it less annoying than having the forums riddled with spam? Absolutely. So some understanding is appreciated.

By the way, if I'm not mistaken, the 45 second rule is only lifted for forum moderators within their respective forums. Since SuperMods are mods in all forums, the 45 second rule is lifted for them. But it is not meant to be taken advantage of. So if you notice anyone taking advantage of this (and I mean frequently and excessively), please let me know.

As for your question of whether spam (in the sense of posting relatively unrelated offtopic posts and NOT referring to real spam) is permitted or not.....the answer would be that it is only permitted in selected areas such as the IYPC thread for the specific purpose of preventing offtopic discussions from reaching regular threads. Real spam is never permitted (different than "free ads" which are permitted to be posted in the free classifieds forums).

The character count is along the same lines. New users must have a minimum post count of 20 before posting a link. Spam bots don't necessarily know this. They also don't necessarily know the minimum character requirement. Therefore, many spam bots don't even make it to that point before giving up and targeting a less restricted site instead.

For the record, the character count is in place for EVERYONE (including Admins). I find it just as annoying as you. But like most users, I prefer that relatively minor restriction than having to deal with real spam. Again, your understanding is appreciated.

    Hope this helps.
