    personal blog posting

    Advertisements

I know that in the past, posting the link to a personal blog used to be allowed, but it was discontinued some time ago. However, I'd like to suggest that it be brought back. I understand that it is currently banned as it's viewed as advertising, but even if that is advertising, perhaps it's advertising that's worth allowing.

Personally, I have gotten PMs and e-mails asking for my blog address, or various people telling me that they found my blog useful. Along with my random musings, I also post a lot of advice and experiences from my last two years of med school which are apparently helpful to a lot of people. I think it would be beneficial to many to be able to direct people to blogs.

Also, when I started on ValueMD, I quickly found two blogs in particular, both by students that are about a year ahead of me now, to be very helpful. I got a lot of advice from them, was neighbors with one of them, and still keep in touch with the other. If not for their blogs being listed in their signatures, I would have never found them, and many questions would have gone unanswered. And, they were not things that could have been answered on ValueMD; they were information that I gathered from their postings, that I wouldn't have even thought to ask otherwise.

I know that there is a blog system on ValueMD, but I really don't think it's realistic to expect many people to fully utilize it. It is obviously not nearly as featured as any one of the dedicated blogging sites, and it would be far less utilized than most of the others. People probably also aren't going to post the same blog post twice.

So, I really don't see the harm in people giving out links to their blog. It could potentially do more good than bad. I know for sure it helped me in the past, and other people have told me that mine helped them. Any chance of getting this re-enabled? Thanks for considering.

I have to agree. All the blogs that I found when i started at VMD were through people's sigs here.

In the meantime, i have two websites in my sig. they are not hyperlinked but maybe you could try that. Although I am not sure if that is allowed or not. Obviously the websites in my sig are not ads.

We've been trying to expand the functionality of the VMD Blogs, but we realize it will take time to get there. But if you really just want to help others, why not just cut-n-paste your blog entries into your VMD Blog?

argazul, unfortunately, the links in your sig are not permitted. But it doesn't have to do with any ads being posted or not. The problem is that, like most of our rules, they are black and white to make it easier to enforce. Links to external sites are not allowed to be placed in your signature, regardless of the intent.

You probably don't realize it, but others who see the links in your signature think that it is ok to post links in their signatures. Before you know it, you have a bunch of spam in signatures. That leads to the spammers posting nonsense to increase their exposure so more people will see the links in their signatures. Add to that the fact that spam bots will pick up on the external links in signatures as part of their criteria to know which forums to spam.

We don't have those problems with internal links, and that is why we allow links to your personal VMD blogs if you wish.

You have no idea how many spammers we're constantly trying to prevent from invading the site. Thanks to our many anti-spam features, users who report spam, and mods who react quickly to reports, you probably wouldn't even think it's an issue. But believe me, it's a lot of work to keep it under control. So every little bit helps, including not allowing links in signatures.

    Hope you'll understand.

p.s. slevit1, I can see that your blog link is located on the "home page" field of your profile, so users do have a way to find it easily

I didn't know where the home page link showed up, until I just went searching for it. I've edited my signature accordingly. Although I still wish we could just give the link, I can accept the explanation.

Ok I will edit my signature. Wouldn't want to cause more spam on these forums (other than our own )
