    Why aren't things just deleted

    Advertisements

a question to the mods and admin of this site...

Why are threads that contain nothing but useless attacks and complete nonsense locked instead of deleted with an explanation. (look at the thread below this one)

Locking the thread leaves the slanderous and false statements there and doesn't allow anyone to contribute. Deleting it and leaving a post saying that "this thread was deleted by xyz due to slanderous and false statements"

sadly this site still comes up very high on a google search...

This is another reason why no one from the school comes here to post useful information, attacks and useless threads are still allowed to be posted.

feel free to lock this one too...

We try to stay on top of the attacks. It is not for us to decide what is true and what is not. We try not to censor. You can say whatever you please if it is in the confines of the terms of service of this site. To use the abridged version...no cursing, no flaming, and no insulting other users. Anything else is fair game. Your first reaction may be that it is a stupid policy. Look deeper. How can we decide what is truth and what is fiction? What do we base that decision on? How do we decide who to trust and who not to?

its always amazing to see that there are as many people who feel we are too prohibitive of individual speech as those who feel we are not strict enough.

Basically, its not against terms of use to post incorrect information. the only varient of this that IS against terms of use is a sustained campaign that is tatamount to trolling.

Aside from it being completely impractical for mods or admin to figure out which part of which post of thousands may or may not contain "false" information, we efel that the truth tends to come out and that most people are reasonable enough to come to their own conclusions and weigh in on the value of a given user and his/her content.

Therads are locked typically when users turn them into non contructive arguements. that you see this in some forums than others, well we're happy to let users come to their own conclusions as to what this means.

Most people who want strict control over content really want to controll what others think or know. Our feeling is that letting information out there is the best way for people to come to a conclusion. Most people with an adgenda against a person or against a school or a political party etc stick out like a sore thumb. The terms of use have no interest in controling content or opinion, only in providing a forum where free discourse is encouraged and permitted by keeping a professional tone and not letting things deteriorate into a playground. Most users can do this with TOS. The trouble are the few who can't and would swamp the forum with bad faith behavior.

    Moving to suggestion forum.

ok... well i'm not saying delete every negative thing posted... because some of the negative things posted are infact true...

but when you look at the post that i was refering too...

The poster clearly put a thread title stating "we've got loans" which is an issue with the school right now... and sadly the reality is that the school doesn't have loans... so its a big flag just to get people to look at the thread...

then they go on to simply say... "haha just kidding St Chris still sucks"

am i the only one that see's a problem with that? and that the user should be reprimanded in some fashion and that the thread should be deleted?

If i'm wrong please tell me because then i know several people who would love to post similar things in every forum for every other school? The TOS for this site is very grey and alot of slander can be done and still not violate the TOS...

See what i'm getting at.. you let this go in one forum.. you have to let it go in all the other ones...

    common sense people..

Did you notice the user got a warning for it? If we delete such posts, then instead of being seen as doing a public service, we are censoring. People will blow things out of proportion. Moderation is a damned if you do, and damned if you don't type of job. If we delete we are censoring, if we don't we are letting the forum be over-run with useless garbage. If we warn, lock, and leave it up people see 1. you can't do that, and 2. we don't censor. G

    sorry... my mistake

obviously the current strategy that you guys are using is working great... the number of TOS violations has dramatically dropped... and people have stopped constantly bashing schools.. the warning system really does deter people...

    keep up the good work

    please delete that post

It looks like you guys (mods) are trying to take a neutral stance and that is a good thing.

However, by allowing that post to stay up, appears that you are supporting it and allowing the hate of our school. I don't see how that is being neutral.

I honestly appreciate that. However, I don't believe it is consistently or uniformly enforced. Some are given private warnings, others are hit with an immediate infraction. It does seem differentially applied, in my humble opinion. I have never seen or heard of a moderator changing her mind about editing or issuing infractions. Doesn't that strike you as a bit odd and overly subjective?

By in large, most of the information provided on vmd is worthwhile in my opinion.

    Regards,

    Jackb

just look at SDN and see what a forum is like to not have a TOS and/or moderators to enforce it, it's chaos
