    The Beginning

    Advertisements

    Hello,
How is everyone doing? I hope y'all had a great Christmas and onto wrapping up the 2010 and to start fresh for 2011. First off, late Merry Christmas and early Happy new year!! I just realized over the break that I have not achieved anything but just sleeping in and doing nothing. So, I thought I should start looking for what I need to do early to be ready for MCAT test in 3 years. Sorry, I didn't introduce myself yet. Well, I am currently enrolled in Fresno State (Freshman, just finished my 1st semester successfully looking for 3.5 or 3.75 GPA). My major is Kinesiology emphasis on Exercise Science and minor would be Psychology, Art, or Music depending on what I like the most but I like them all, haha. Oops, I got off track. Anyways, I was wondering what I could be or should be working on as a Freshman? I went to my school's med school club earlier and the main guy said if I'm a freshman I should look for a major or just enjoy my freshman year. Ah, my high school counselor told me I should start working on my internship and I was thinking about doing over the summer. I have a few people I can call. But I'm wondering if I can start internship right now because I have no idea about what Orthopedic surgeons do.
Basically, I just want some advises and wisdoms from upper classmates because I don't have any clues. Plus, I'm not originally from US so I don't know much about how educating works.

i think right now it will be best for you to find an internship position or volunteer site where you can experience whats it like to be in the medical field. the eariler you start volunteering you will be better off knowing for sure that medicine is indeed the right path. also if you don't know anything about what osteopathic surgeons do, you can possibily do some research over the holidays =)

Congratulations in figuring out what you want to do. I think that is awesome. I also think that helping others is a very nice thing to do. Here are a few tips for you to consider:

    1. Do a lot of internet research on what type of surgeon that you want to be.

    2. Make sure that you study early and very often.

    3. Make sure that you prioritize your studies and what you have to do.

    4. Volunteer at a hospital so that you can see what goes on everyday.

I hope this helps you and good luck.

Congratulations in wanting to take the MCAT test. Here are some ways in order to help you:

    1. Study in chunks of material at a time.

    2. Take study breaks.

    3. Give yourself a reward for studying.

    4. Understand what you are studying by doing some research on the MCAT subjects.

Agreed. It's better to try it out first and see if you really like it or not. You don't want to make a long term commitment in something you might not fully enjoy. Try before you buy
