They have been saying that for a while (for eg, I saw something like this in the old network54 forum). Probably a more definitive status could be had from the California Medical Board.

    California Process

dt is right. We have been saying that for a while!

The process of gaining approval in California is a lengthy one, but fortunately, the end is in sight. Two representatives will be visiting Grand Cayman in the fall, and they will then report back to the full board. We should hear their decision in early 2004.

So, if you would only want to practice in California, I couldn't tell you to apply to St. Matthew's until we are officially approved. On the other hand, if you would prefer to practice in California, but would be happy in other states as well, go ahead and apply.

As always, get outside confirmation of anything I or anyone else says. I believes Pat Parks from the California Board is on the valuemd forums from time to time.

    NY as well

New York is also coming for their site visit this fall. Approval would open up a wealth of clinical clerkships and residencies for our students. We should also have their decision early next year.

We feel very confident that the boards will recognize St. Matthew's as a quality medical education provider. Again, the final decisions rest with them, so we'll just have to wait and see.

As always, check with the board of whichever state, province, or country you'd like to practice in.

It is a very busy and exciting time for us, but I am excited to see people taking an interest in St. Matthew's and asking the critical questions.

jenni, take a look at the responses in the Saba forum to your question there.

    Clarification

    jenni,

Let me explain California a little more clearly.

As of today, No SMU student or grad can take clinicals, gain residency, or get a permanent license in California.

If California gives us approval in Spring 2004, every graduate after Spring 2004 would be able to get residency and licensure in California. The Board might or might not make their decision retroactive, meaning that past grads might or might not be able to practice in California.

So, if we get approved, you can do your residency anywhere, and then apply to CA for a license. Or to do both in California. Or even do your residency there and get your license somewhere else.

    Hope that clears things up.

    PLAB

    highlandpoet,

I do not know that one off the top of my head, but I have contacted our U.K. Clinical Dean in order to get you the full answer. I will post it as soon as I hear back from him.
