    SMU is a good school

    Advertisements

I am a carribean grad who graduated in the early 80's and been monitoring the carribean med education for over 25 years, I have seen set backs with most schools, initial denial then approvals, etc.
I do believe that SMU will get approved by everyone for simple reason:your school doing everything in its power to advance, the approval by the DOE,the NY approval, tried CA and they claimed you have defeciencies,ok they disagree on some and will take care of the rest, eventually I think it will be ok for the future students.
do not feel bad because the problem is in the system and not you or the school, how do you feel if you go to a school before the disapproval process started, graduating in 84,6 years of US med educaion[residency/fellowship,double board certified,3 academic appointments with 3 US med schools, many licenses in the US,voted one of the best doctors in America...etc they tell you, sorry you can't fill application on the basis of an MD degree[recieved over 20 yrs ago!!!!!!!],yet in the same household here non carribean grad barely passed ,not board certified, poor education [I know because I was dating such person and helped her in exams] gets full help and super eligible!!!
I am sharing my story to tell you that is wrong, protecting the public starts by evaluating all IMG's not targeting and giving hard time to your own].
Even if it was made as a law in few states to prevent some very qualified from practicing, the good news the superior courts always stood by what is right, the perfect example is the Okahoma case and all cases had one outcome: that is unconstitutional and denial of equal opportunity.
I do not believe good school like SMU name should be in the same page with few other closed schools or older schools that have much lowe standards, that is very unfair>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
    Good luck

    FSMB

It will be interesting to see what the FSMB concludes. It may change everything for better or for worse. It may make med school approval standard throughout the country. I agree, SMU should not be in the same category as many of the other "lower tier" schools. G

    =)

great post ASIANDOC, sometimes when people receive bad news they tend not to think long term...i know that i didnt.

SMU is definitely doing all that it can to improve ; the way that the school handled the whole ivan situation and the speed at which they secured and organized teachers and classes following the hurricane was surprisingly efficient and well done.

The Oklahoma case will, hopefully, be a landmark case and clear up all FMGs to practice in all 50 states. I personally know of several students at schools overseas that are considered "cleared" but that graduate students with questionable skills ; "grandfathering" in these students and denying Carib students seems to be quite unfair.

Hopefully my fellow classmates will realize that Rome wasn't built in a day, and that SMU has made huge strides in the last few years. Truth be told, I will be the first to admit that there are things that need to be changed within the school, but i do recognize that the school is making a valid effort to address their insufficiencies...the only thing that at this point really disappoints me is that so many students only address what they feel are the negatives that SMU offers...hopefully soon those students will soon try to help the school and their fellow students instead if spending all their time being negative and bashing it.
