Possible Jan/Spring 2013 Incoming Student: Current Student Contacts/Questions?

    Advertisements

Hello everyone. I have been accepted into the upcoming 2013 Spring semester class.

Filtering through the grit in this forum is ridiculous. It's either just incredibly negative viewpoints or positive posts (with negative commentators accusing these posters of being disguised administration posers or something of the sort). I haven't submitted my papers to reserve my seat yet, and truthfully I am hesitant.

I want to believe that hard work and diligence will push my through the rough changes in the basic sciences and clinicals, but honestly, congrats to the naysayers of SMU for successfully freaking me out so far.

I was just wondering if there are any students from 2011/2012 or whenever the new curriculum for the basic sciences began, for me to talk to. I would just like to ask you guys a few questions about the curriculum, the island, the faculty, etc. without getting polar outside opinions and straying off topic. That said, I would like some honest opinions (good, bad, everything really) so if you can, please drop me a message here on this forum. I sincerely appreciate it!

    hi guys,

it's incredible to read all the negative reviews of smu. i'm applying for residencies right now and really don't get where all this comes from. I found clinicals to be difficult but good. some teachers were excellent, others just ok. but all the teachers were willing to help. i think too many students get used to the idea of people spoon feeding them. you have to work if you want to succeed. I never failed a class and passed step 1 first try. clinicals in florida are excellent. for electives, you can go anywhere, i even did one emergency medicine rotation at the Mayo clinic. make sure to study all through core rotations and step 2 is much easier than step 1. i am applying to residencies now. i've been offered many interviews, granted it's family medicine, but at truly fantastic universities (illinois, wisconsin, virginia tech etc...). the road is not perfect. the administration is not great. but, at the end of the day, it is a means to an end. it gets you where you want to be. don't listen to all these people who write 50 negative posts about smu. CLEARLY they don't have anything better to do and is probably pretty indicative of why they failed and are disgruntled. I think the best way to judge the school is look at the residency list. 160+ matches last year. you want to be a doctor, here's your shot. what you do with it is up to you. now if you want personal advice or want to call and chat with me, i'm happy to accommodate.

remember, your future is decided by you, but SMU offers an opportunity and you can make it into whatever you want.

What I worry about is the future. The window of opportunity for IMGs to obtain residency positions is narrowing as time goes on.

    Jan 2013

I'm in the process of submitting my paper works for Jan 2013. I've just recently found and started reading the posts on this forum and the negativity towards SMU is astounding. Although the negative comments made me a little extra nervous, I know the program is achievable. My brother is a SMU graduate and a successful Board certified MD right now.

Those taking a chance, I'll see you in January.

    Wes

    Smu

If you are looking for reaffirmation or support, you came to the wrong place. if you go to any caribbean school the support and drive has to come within. If you want it bad enough, you will become a physician, an M.D. But don't depend on message boards for support or advice, trust yourself and go from there. The time frame for IMG's is narrowing, but still open for those that would like to squeak through. Good luck, work hard and stay focused. If you have any questions please email me.

And Wes, you are right, the negativity is fairly astounding, but coming from someone who is close to graduating and getting plenty of residency interviews, I tend to pay these nay-sayer's no mind. If they were getting residency offers, or for that matter had passed a class at SMU, they probably wouldn't have the time to waste posting messages on SMU board. Just saying. But then again, if i was flunking out from a caribbean school, I'd probably want to blame someone too, cause it couldn't be me right??? laughable.

    Popup,

Your best option to get in touch with current students is to get the president of SGA at SMU. If he cannot answer, he will direct you to students that normally help.
