SMU's STEP 1 passing rate (REAL NUMBERS)

I found very interesting article "Medical education in the Caribbean: a longitudinal study of United States medical licensing examination performance, 2000-2009."

SMU's STEP 1 pass rate is not exactly what administration states on the website
"With US Medical Licensing Examination Step One pass rates of above 90%, our students' performance is on parity with students from U.S. medical schools and far above the average level of students from other non-U.S. schools (61%)." The website was updated last time 05/01/09"

The article says that first attempt pass rate of SMU students was 59,6% in 2008 and dropped to 51,6% in 2009.

Basically SMU's pass rate is lower then that of Jamaican students..

BTW STEP 2 CK is not that great either 65,3% in 2009 vs. 81,3% of Cuban students (Spanish speaking!!!)

Maybe it is the student in the end who decides, however, it is still false advertising and gives a false sense of security to prospective students. I will also say that while some can learn everything on their own, some can do it with a little help and guidance. That group of people are the one's who are getting screwed in the end. Some students in US schools have no business being there either, but the schools work with them to make sure they pass what they need to. Not unheard of for someone to fail a US School, but less likely because they work harder to make sure you know what you need to.

    I shake your hand, mon!!!

As with anything in life, there's always a silver lining to things. If you look at the data, the number of students sitting for the exams have gone up since 2000, with a predictable rise in pass rates from ~20% to near 60%. There's more of them and they're passing at a higher rate, and I attribute that to one or both of two things: an increase in the caliber of students at SMU and an improved curriculum.

I remember on the island that there was talk that my class was "one of the smartest" to come through those halls. There were a lot of changes the administration and deans made to the curriculum based on my class and their insistence on making them happen for our benefit. I guess it remains to be seen, however, how long those changes will be beneficial.

As a side-note, this just goes to prove that people should really consider going to the top 4 before any other school in the caribbean. They're the Big 4 for a reason.

Just as a geographical sidelight, Harvard Med and Harvard SPH are in Boston. The other Harvard campuses are on the Cambridge side of the Charles.

    Horrible lie!

There are so many things you may want to lie about when you are in a “Banana republic” country like those in the Caribbean but not the passing rate of the boards or the USMLE! This is was too bad to lie about and so misleading! Aside to the fact that students who come to SMU are not the best in term of making the best decision in terms of their cost of study in a horribly expensive island, but also get deceived and fooled and misinformed about the crucial factor that guarantee the success of any school and most important which is the passing rate of the USMLE. The school always lied in its website and said that the passing rate has been above 90% where in fact it was ranging from 20% to 55% in the last 10 years!
This is way beyond any other lie!
