SMU's STEP 1 passing rate (REAL NUMBERS)

I found very interesting article "Medical education in the Caribbean: a longitudinal study of United States medical licensing examination performance, 2000-2009."

SMU's STEP 1 pass rate is not exactly what administration states on the website
"With US Medical Licensing Examination Step One pass rates of above 90%, our students' performance is on parity with students from U.S. medical schools and far above the average level of students from other non-U.S. schools (61%)." The website was updated last time 05/01/09"

The article says that first attempt pass rate of SMU students was 59,6% in 2008 and dropped to 51,6% in 2009.

Basically SMU's pass rate is lower then that of Jamaican students..

BTW STEP 2 CK is not that great either 65,3% in 2009 vs. 81,3% of Cuban students (Spanish speaking!!!)

The school does a good job in the basic sciences. It is the students responsibility to not simply go through powerpoints but to open up Robbins, open up Costanzo, katzung and trevor etc.
Some students like you understand what it takes but majority do not. School's responsibility is exactly to explain what to do and how to study.. Otherwise why would you need all these faculties?
The school does NOT do good job in basic science (look at the pass rate). Whatever is happening at SMU is a consequence of mismanagement and placement of wrong people at key positions..
You can graduate from any St.Kitts school twice cheaper with the same result - 50% pass rate...

My point is that they LIE ( big time)!!!

I said this in another thread and jacket echoed it earlier in this one. When you have students who half *** it in class, go out every weekend what kind of test scores do you expect. Some people can do this and still be successful, but not many. If the students do not put the time in, they have nobody to blame but their self. John did you ever stop and think for a second while asking yourself why the Step score are so low, could it be that other schools have better quality of students over all? I am not saying SMU does not have some good students, because they do, but from top to bottom they do not compare with Ross or SGU.

That is not the point of my thread. The point is regardless whether students are good or bad school lies to prospective students...

I will agree with your statement that they lie. You started this thread about the pass rates, the pass rates have nothing to do with the fact that the school lies. The pass rates have everything to do with the quality of the students. What is your opinion on the overall quality of the student body?

We are all adults at SMU. SMU has no responsibility to hold your hand during the process we are not children. You come here to work your *** off, not to be walked through school. The first time pass rate according to this is 60% what do you think it should. There are alot of students that could be in Cambridge, sitting at Harvard Medical school and would have ZERO chance of passing step 1 either because they are dumb or lazy. Would you then say Harvard has crappy basic sciences. It is ALL about the caliber of the student. What is the school suppose to do go slower so the dumber students can grasp the material. Med school really isnt hard it is just a very, very large volume of information. SMU gives you the down and dirty essentials during basic sciences in class, it is then the students job to make sure their foundation is solid. That is something ALOT of SMU students do not do. Dont expect the pass rate to go up anytime soon unless, SMU starts increasing the caliber of student that is admitted. I actually expect it to go down with as SMU continues not to have loans (hurts SMU more than any other school since it is so expensive on Grand Cayman), continues to have issues with the California disapproval.

Of course it does, SMU shouts all over "we are the best, as good as any med school in the States.."" Look at the faculties, look at the campus, look for JC sake at pass rate!!!
Why do you think students still go to SMU?? Two main reasons advertised on the website - 1. Safe island, 2. >90% pass rate. That's all what you need to get poor souls to enroll...

Again it's not about students, it's about SMU's overpriced program, false information and tons of money spent for nothing.

I am telling prospective students not to rush with decision, research properly and make choice wisely...

Listen buddy I see a pattern with your posts and that pattern is anti-SMU. You act as if everything is SMU's fault. SMU could lie or stretch the truth about pass rates, guess what, that does not determine how you perform on the Step. How you perform is up to the individual. If you want it bad enough you will be successful at SMU, it all depends on "how hungry you are".

yeah but either way OP even titled the thread "SMU's Step 1 passing rate real numbers". Maybe it is the student in the end who decides, however, it is still false advertising and gives a false sense of security to prospective students. I will also say that while some can learn everything on their own, some can do it with a little help and guidance. That group of people are the one's who are getting screwed in the end. Some students in US schools have no business being there either, but the schools work with them to make sure they pass what they need to. Not unheard of for someone to fail a US School, but less likely because they work harder to make sure you know what you need to.
