    prospective students please look

    Advertisements

This is something I hope alot of people read, really think about it before making and decisions. I wish i read this before coming here instead of SGU or Ross.

Do not come to SMU unless you have exhausted all other options in the Caribbean. There are 7 better options you should be rejected 2x from before coming to SMU. They are:
    1. SGU- 50 states, federal money, much better clinicals/reputation
    2. Ross- 50 states, federal money, better reputation, clinicals
    3. AUC- 50 states, federal money, better reputation, clinicals
    4. Saba- 50 states, better reputation
    5. AUA- Better loans, not dissaproved, applying for Cali
    6. MUA- Not disapproved by Cali
    7. UMHS- Not disapproved by Cali, Tons of money being poured into school, proven leadership

The biggest factor not to come to SMU is the Cali disapproval. Do not let anyone in admissions tell you well we are approved in states X, Y, Z and thats where you want to go so its not a big problem. It is a huge problem, when i started we couldnt practice in 4 states now a year and so later it is 13. How many more will it become in the in the next year.

The school has no plan to apply for Cali anytime soon and without their approval, nothing will get better. The loan situation is bad. Ed-invest is a loan shark and dosent provide you with enough money so you are pretty much forced to do the garbage Davenport program to get by. You should be focusing on med school not a MBA.

The admin in Orlando, JM, DR. M (dean of clinicals) are both used car salesmen, will say anything they think you want to hear, both are dishonest. The rest of Orlando is pretty much incompetent and it is a hassel to get even the most mundane task accomplished. This school does not care at all about students, just the bottom line. I understand it is a buisness but at least portray the look of caring for students.

The school does have its pluses. It is on the best island in the Caribb. The basic science education is quality and for the most part the faculty is very good. That being said SMU is not worth the investment in regards to the amount of risk it possess. Please do not come to SMU, it will be the start of a very large headache that will haunt you for the rest of your medical career.

Super, another post on this subject. I think some people need to spend more time studying and less time whining. If someone does not like the school, then TRANSFER.

Even so....do we need a new topic on this every stinking week. If you still go to school at SMU you should be actively recruiting students to go there so that it continues to exist.

Ok, few problems with your list of schools.

AUA- no track record; no residency programs know of it. Not approved by Cali, which means it is the same as SMU. Can't practice in Cali or any states that follow the list. Same financial aid situation as SMU. Limited clinicals.

MUA- Limited clinicals. Same financial aid situation as SMU. Same Cali situation (not approved, cannot practice in Cali or states which use the list).

UMHS- Not one single gradute, completely unknown by US residencies (no one cares about a "Ross-backed school"; only "Ross University" will get you into more doors than "SMU" will). Not approved by FL, NY, or Cali (which means you cannot practice in Cali or any states that follow the Cali list). VERY VERY limited clinical situation (cannot rotate in NY for all rotations because of licensing issues). Too new. 5th semester program can only accomodate 25 students.

If you're not approved by California, you're in the same boat as SMU.

Talk to people who have been on residency interviews, they will tell you things like, "the director said he's interviewed and accepted a lot of SMU students" or "they said- we have had a good experience with SMU" or "he told me- our cheif resident went to your school". Reputation does matter. While SMU ain't Hopkins, it has some successful people in the real world right now.

So, back to the list. I'd say MUA is even with SMU, but AUA and ESPECIALLY UMHS, below SMU.

there IS a difference between being DISapproved by Cali and not yet approved by cali...some of the states SMU is ineligible for licensure is not because the state uses the cali list, but because a school cannot be disapproved by another state, so MUA, AUA, and even UMHS have that over SMU...

Yeah...well...then...California are a bunch of poopyheads!

Not saying you're wrong, but from what I've read, many of the states will consider both, whether disapproved or unapproved, you're still NOT approved! Either you die by pistol or atomic bomb...either way, still pushing up the flowers.

First off.. don't think that residency programs hearing of your school helps you. You are a Carib student.. they don't care which school, unless you are going to a school where one of the big 3/4 have a presence. Also, AUA now has at least 5 US 5th semester sites, with more on the way.. and a new nice campus. They have as many or more clinicals than SMU.

MUA- Limited clinicals. Same financial aid situation as SMU. Same Cali situation (not approved, cannot practice in Cali or states which use the list).

I will address the Cali thing here. As someone else posted, California's list, is only followed in a few states. Most states that SMU gets defaulted into not being able to practice in, is because their specific language in their rule say that if your school is disapproved by another school, they will not let you practice there.

Well.. above you stated that AUA had no name.. but now name doesn't seem to matter to you. IF it is a Ross friendly program, his name still works. School is too new, but they have a lot of positives that are hard to ignore.

If you're not approved by California, you're in the same boat as SMU.

SMU is one of the few Carib schools that has taken many steps backward over the past few years, while the other schools have been progressive. If it is so great, why does this trend continue?

In Theory yes, in actuality no. None of the states that smu is inelgible will grant a license to any of the other schools that aren't approved. They will allow you to apply but then play games with you and make you jump through hoops with their application but ultimately you won't get a license.
Well, he's had it in for me ever since I "kinda" ran over his dog. Actually, replace "kinda" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."
