The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty: it's twice as big as it needs to be.

I think we have had our ten days of freaking out and yelling on here and against SMU. That is plenty of panic to go around and we certainly don't need that panic to spread any more than it has already.

Oh I think it is much too late for that. The rippling effect of this panic is yet to be seen. Imagine the number of e-mails and phone calls that will be going out on a daily basis, to every medical board in the country. Hopefully many will think before they speak, and perhaps turn some heads rather than leave people in disgust. For those of you who have been making disparaging comments about secretaries, consider them like nurses in your clinical rotations..........you piss them off, and you can consider yourself and the rest of us doomed.

Furthermore, before all you haters, skeptics, pessimists, and doomsday prophets accuse me of drinking the kool aid. Consider that just like you I am in 200K debt and in danger of settling for a managerial position at McDonalds. But while designing pretty maps on a Sunday afternoon, or curling into a fetal position, and hoping the world will end before the last state adopts the Cali list, may be fun and therapeutic. Taking control of your own life, may likely be much more worth your time.

Therefore, on the more constructive note, I would like to propose an idea to those of us who are applying for the match of 2009. It appears that many of us have been receiving interview denials from certain residency programs on the basis of the California list. Therefore, in response why not create a greater awareness of the credentials that justify the SMU medical program in the first place. For example, New York State alone, visited the school 3 times I think in the last 2 years, with another visit, if I'm not mistaken, coming up this spring. The official NY site review was once posted on this forum by JTP.........dude, I dont even know where to look for this thing, maybe you can post it again.

In addition, SMU is recognized by the Accreditation Commission on College of Medicine (ACCM), which is recognized by the United States Department of Education. Again, if I recall correctly, ACCM inspected the school at least 2 times in the last 3 years. That is a total of 5 visits from New York State and ACCM combined. There is no other medical school in the Caribbean, currently under more scrutiny for quality control than SMU, and I dont think that this fact should be ignored. This is especially important when you consider the company of the schools on the California disapproved list. This is by no means meant to be a disparaging comment towards Spartan University. They were recently purchased by a group from NY, and they are making big strides towards improving their image. But being in the company of the rest is simply not fair, especially that 3 no longer even exist.

You know, that is precisely the problem. Panic set in because people started hearing from medical boards, rumors started, wild emails were written, threats were made, who knows what the boards are thinking right now... The real problem is the lack of centralized information - it is coming from every direction and we are all panicking in trying to digest it all while applying at the same time.

The sad footnote to this situation for me personally is that I wrote a new PS for family medicine on friday and applied to many FM programs over the weekend. I just don't trust the licensing issue anymore to limit myself to IM only in the states we have - the competition has just got a lot stiffer for SMU grads in places like NY. I never thought I would be a family doc but hey desperate times makes strange bedfellows. Now I just want to make a living and pay off my loans! Never mind thinking big and specializing anymore... licensing doubts already have cut off so many programs for us and I am desperate to find a spot and survive. I hope others take a deep breath and we all can tackle this somewhat professionally.

I like your suggestion about summarizing SMU's credentials. The question is how do we get these credentials to the programs? I guess if programs (such as in GA) question SMU's status, we can sent the list of credentials to them...

Apart from the MSPE, I don't plan on going through SMU for anything else. I have lost 99% of my faith in them by now. The secretaries and coordinators, however, are fantastic and have been always helpful... they do not deserve to be lumped in with the business types at the top who do nothing.

    ... hey, 500th post! w00t!
