SMU has to be one of the toughest offshore schools

    Advertisements

how many other schools have this many tests during clinicals?
    or even a shelf exam?

I can only think of 1: AUC
    maybe SGU?

Ross gets to enjoy the huge grade inflation, esp during clinical years, where the grades matter the most.

I'm not in clinicals yet so I can't comment on that...... Only that transfers from other schools like the fact that we have many exams every 3 weeks instead of just one mid-term and a final so you can actually make up a bad grade. In basic sciences, that is.

I guess its a good thing smu has all these tests during clinicals. It makes the school look more reputable. I wish the quiz and midterm questions were more board relevant and not difficult for no reason with no teaching point though.I dunno if its hurting the student's overall clinical grades or not but it is an annoyance. Grades are very subjective in clinicals anyway.
Well, he's had it in for me ever since I "kinda" ran over his dog. Actually, replace "kinda" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."

I checked out the clinical scoring breakdown and I'm not sure of the difference between "cores with exams" and "cores without exams". I thought all cores have a shelf exam we must sit for? In any case this is very encouraging because I would hate to have ~90% of my core grade being determined on the mood of the preceptor at the time. But electives, no problem, that's our time to shine.

i think you'll find that most preceptors will be pretty generous, and not have a mood issue. They'll check off all the "outstanding" boxes, and write a few generic comments. Ross has had much success so far. Most of their students, even slackers I've seen, get more 5's than 4's on their 5-point-scale evaluations, which translates into an "A".
I think this helps them Match for residency.

oh yeah. Ross doesn't even have to write patient logs. They can see just one pt the whole rotation, even.

I wish we had it that good. Just show up to the rotation, and get a grade, and not have to worry about anything else except studying for Step 2 at your own pace.

Do clinical shelf exams help in prep for Step 2? Coz we had a prof that was an SMU grad but he couldn't pass Step 2 after several attempts. We never could figure out why he kept failing step 2, and it scared some of us.

yes they do. similar style Qs, just as the beh sci shelfs and step1.
but remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.

What scared me was that we actually were taught from that fellow. I'd love for OPPPQQRRSSTT to be thrown out the window, but it's just too darned memorable to forget!

oh man. that IS scary, and shameful. why would the school hire him at a time like this? The stupid teach the stupider, who teach dumb and dumberers.

    What class does he teach?

that screams cost-cutting, or that no one wants to work for the school.
