    Dismissed SGU

    Advertisements

I have recently overcome the trauma of having been dismissed form SGU (sorry) and decided to continue with my pursuit of medicine. If there is anyone out there that was once in my boat and persevered, please advice. What are the obstacles in my way and how can they be conquered? Your honesty may change the course of my life. Any input will be much appreciated.

I think the OP was IN med school and flunked out...

Here is what I would do.
    Breathe.
Take a few weeks and don't think about it. Get everything else in order.
I would step away from the thought of med school for a while. Clear your head, and find a job/research in a related field. Make some money and slowly reacclimate to the idea of medical school.
Figure out what you did wrong.
If you were out partying, playing on VMD, had drama with bf/gf, - write it out on paper.
    Can these issues be solved?
If you gave it 100% your all, and studied everything, well, then you need to have a gut-check if it is really right for you. Maybe look into a related career.
(I'll never play in the NBA - I have worked through this)
After you have taken time for yourself, (it maybe years as in my case as I just needed to grow up and slow down a bit.)
Start contacting schools that you might get into - lower tier Caribbean schools, post-bac master's programs, etc.
Ease back into it, but do it with a firm grasp on what landed you here in the first place.
Life is not from Point A to Point B - you have 70 years to accomplish this goal.
It would just be cost effective if you do well at one school on this second time around.
    Best of luck man.
Keep your head up - you'll get there if you really want it.

There were quite a few students who came to SMU who had failed out of Ross, AUC, MUA etc. and managed to finish and go on and pass Step 1. I am not sure if any of them will step up here and give you the info but it can be done.

I think if the dismissal was due to academics it would be difficult but possible to get another chance. If it was a behavioral issue that's kind of a black flag. Good luck to you though.

THERE are many people that have transferred schools on this forum. They probably will not out themselves but there is hope. Like the previous poster suggested, apply to the other carribean medical schools out there. If you failed the step multiple times then that is another matter. Some of the schools have a limit on fails. Nonetheless it is SOOOOOOOOO possible and very realistic. Keep your head up and when you are ready call up the other Carribean medical schools admission department and tell them about yourself.
I hate when people always bring up how medicine may not be for them. If you keep practicing at it, you can MAKE it work out for you. The NBA is compiled of a quite a few extraordinary athletes. Medicine has those people but most of them are just ordinary people with an extraordinary amount of perseverence.
    Good luck

It's nice to be optimistic but it's even better to be realistic. Medicine really isn't for everyone. If you didn't make it the first time it might be better to move on to something else before you sink yourself into so much debt only to not make it in the end. Your NBA analogy doesn't really apply here. No matter how much I practice basketball, i'm not going to be tall enough. Bottom line, if you don't have a really compelling reason (severe illness, family problems, etc.) for failing the first time, quit and pursue something else before you are buried in debt.

Edit: There are plenty of people who transfer in "good standing" but how many transfer after being dismissed from another school? My guess is not too many.

    dismissal

I personally don't know of any people that tranferred when they were in "good standing", but, I know a considerable number that transferred after they where dismissed for failing the required number of units for their school.

I know.........in hind sight, that if I had acquired the Kaplan books for Step I before I started med school, it would have been a whole different ball game.

It's not something you broadcast, but people are out there. I hope that schools don't admit people for behavioral or criminal dismissal. Just my 2 cents. Good luck, and if it is what you want..........push on.

I think that SMU and other lower tier carib schools have more openings in the summer and Jan so I would apply those months. I would apply and be open as to why you were dismissed and explain what you have done since then or plan to do differently. These schools are for profit and so I doubt that you won't find at least ONE that will take you. Keep your head up. It happens it happens.
