    One Good Comment

    Advertisements

I just wanted to say that I appreciate, more than I can say, that we did receive an email and a post on Angel about the HealthExpress situation yesterday afternoon.

A lot of the students have been dissapointed with the lack of communication from the school to the students. I think the admin needs to realize that even though there are a lot of immature students at our school, we are ALL adults and most of us can handle bad news.

The admin is afraid to talk to us straight up, as grown-ups, about happenings in the school. IF we lose Michigan.. so what.. talk to us, tell us what is going on, why it is happening and we can handle it. IF we lose a loan company, talk to us, give us the information.. assure us you are on top of things. Most things, we as students can't control, a lot of things, the admin can't control, but please... STUDENTS and ADMINISTRATION.. WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER... we are in this together.. You told me my first day at school that I was your product and your customer.. You read me all these lines in your mission statement.. So let's start actually fufilling these things.

The email and post about HealthExpress is EXACTLY what we needed. I know the school (at least financial aid) knew this was coming.. Why didn't you just talk with us, tell us what was going on at that point? Why wait until we get slapped in the face?

I know the admin HATES this site... I am not fond of it myself, but you know what.. I get more information (some false) from here than I EVER get at school. Guess what.. I bet ValueMD's numbers just went up.. because A LOT of those 250 first semesters.. don't know what is going on, so they are now coming on HERE to find out. We should learn of these things from the school officials, not a website.

If you want to stop the rumor mill, then start communicating with US directly.... PLEASE..

Thanks again JM, for your email and post. I look forward to more institutional updates in the future from our administration.

    JOHN WEBB

John very well said, and i agree with you, the only thing is that people are patting SMU on the back for sending out that e-mail but we are forgetting that it is their job. They are supposed to e-mail us and let us know what is going on. I think it is really sad that when we do get an email about what is going on it is a big deal. This should be the norm.

Very well said John! I couldn't agree with you more. There is absolutely NO reason we should be finding out news from VMD, when the school should be keeping us updated via emails and other means of communication.

    Great post

I agree that the SMU forum has taken a turn for the worst. Unfortunately there is no other medium for students to independently post information about the school to other students (or potential students) without the school's intervention. The way the administation has communicated with students in the past has always struck a nerve with me. I felt the past administration held to the notion that keeping us in the dark until there was no other recourse was the best way to run things. Heck the school did not even publish the clinical rotation sites or which states we had licensing issuew with till it was posted on VMD.

Hopefully the new administration can learn from the mistakes from the previous administration. Keeping students in the dark in respect to issues that directly affect them broods mistrust, anger, and animosity towards the administration. We are in this together and I believe as adults we should be made aware of the current status on issues that concern students (status on Cali, loans, clinicals, etc).

After attending a conference and interacting with the director of clinical services, I see that there is hope. VH was honest, and I saw him and PA working their tails off in trying to get new clinical sites. I even had the opportunity to see the school sign on a new clinical affiliation (this is at a slow pace and the clinical site was testing to see how SMU students perform, with me being one of those students).

I recall JP posting on this forum: his honesty and committment to help inform students really put the school in a positive light. The school should reconsider its current policy of boycotting VMD, and assign a school official that could answer questions posted on this site and silence the rumors before they spread havoc across campus and beyond.

Agreed. If this is not the place, and some of these issues are not appropriate to be on public forums, redirect the students to a secure/private forum--one that is password protected and only visible to those who have the privilege. SMU could dispel rumors, encourage meaningful discussion, and this could all be done in private. Perhaps potential students could be granted access to read only, and current students would be allowed to post within reason. There has to be a better way.

There has to be a better way.

At $9,000+ per semester, a simple email would suffice!

Not asking for too much, but simply a monthly email on updates, developments, and current affairs. If they are concerned that students may post contents of those emails on VMD, then there should be a confidentiality statement of some sort on the official school emails stating that "posting of this private/privileged information on public forums is prohibited per University policies"
blah blah blah to protect the integrity of that information.

Sounds like a good project for the current SGA to work on....if they still exist!

    Just my $1.00 - $0.98!
