    Clinical Shelf Exam Tips

    Advertisements

Anyone have any tips on what to study/what to use for the IM, Peds, and Surgery shelf exams?

It kind of sucks now that they aren't curved anymore and now worth 45% of the final grade. My friend at a US med school says his shelf exams are worth 5% of the final clinical score. Then again, his med school is kind of granola crunchy.

Anyway, thanks for any info guys.

No they are not worth 45%....The school said that the average between the preceptor grade and the shelf grade multiplied by .9 + (our daily log grade x .1) = our final grade! Don't try to confuse people! NOT nice!!!

(just in case people don't get my point...I'm being sarcastic). Yes, the shelf being worth 45% is crazy. At this point I just want to get cores over with. Just a heads up for those about to enter clinicals:

If you get an 80 for a preceptor score + a 50 on the shelf + a 90 on the daily log, you just earned yourself a 74. Getting anything less than the above numbers I gave brings you in jeopardy of failing the core rotation.

Shelf exams are not curved (the school uses your raw grade). I don't know why they changed the old system (shelf being worth 20%). Heck the shelf is only worth 15% for the basic sciences, why should it weigh more for clinicals?

For IM & Psych I used the kaplan lectures and books. I also used the pretest questions for each core. I scored a decent score on each exam. Good luck.

Yup, the pretest series has books on each core rotation (minus FP) and also for some electives (Radiology, EM, and neuro).

The evaluation and exam are worth 50% each not 45%. Your calculation of the final grade is correct but the information given is incorrect.

    80 on evaluation x 45% = 36
    50 or shelf exam x 45% = 22.5
add 9 out of 10 possible pts for the log and your final grade is = 67.5

    80 on evaluation x 50% = 40
    50 on shelf exam x 50% = 25
add 9 out of 10 possible pts for the log and your final grade is = 74

    raw score?

So do you guys just think its ok that raw scores are being used to tabulate grades as opposed to correlating ones (like they do in US schools)?

just curious what people thought. . . .thanks

I really don't care about the raw scores vs correlated scores...What bothers me the most is that the shelf is worth more than 20%. However you calculate your grades, the shelf still is worth more than what it is worth than the basic sciences. There would be an uproar if about 50% of the grade were based on the performance of the shelf for basic sciences.
