    Step one timing

Simple question, do you prefer taking Step one in the middle of 5th semester or would you prefer having a board semester after 5th?

Taking the step 1 in the 5th semester is probably enough for those who simply want to pass. However, for those of us who want to match into a more competitive residency taking the additional 2 or 3 months to study for it is a must. I know the latter is true for myself and I'm not going to lie to myself thinking that I can score in the 90th percentile simply by studying for 6 weeks. I know how I performed on the MCAT well enough to realize that 6 weeks is a death sentence.

Oh. So then you are just guessing that 3 months is too long ...

Actually, 3 months probably would be a little too long. I recommend taking 8-10 weeks to put it all together. I only took 5 weeks and narrowly missed.

In my experience, 3 months is an appropriate time for studying step I if you are average students. If you are honor students, take step I right after fifth semester. If you are below than average students, take your time at least 6 months.

I love when people say average student, when somebody who gets A's in basic science ends up failing USMLE and somebody who is a C's student passes very well in the same test, well who is average student!!
